Dudes, what do you call bears in your country, and is the word similar in meaning to anything else?

In many ancient indoeuropean societies, bears were sacred and feared so much it was taboo to speak their real names. So many languages use euphamisms.

English "bear" originally just mean 'the brown one'.
Russian "medvedev" means 'the honey eater'.

Anyone know any more?
