OP wrote 'the' lingua franca, that was the Spaniard's point. next door, the Parthians and the Sassanids used Aramaic as a lingua franca, the Rashiduns and Umayyads Arabic and for both of those Latin was overall less important than Greek considering the Seleucids and for the latter, the occupation of Eastern Roman territory. even in Rome before the fall of the West, Greek was as much of a lingua franca as Latin. and we're just covering the major states of Western Eurasia here. Medieval Western Europe arguably had Latin but Eastern Europe had Greek and Old Church Slavonic

in modern times, it's easier to call one language *the* lingua franca

actually now i remember that they were trying to teach german in spain for a long time starting in the 40's
like, until the 70's they were trying to teach german besides french as the foreign language
we also have the same timezone as germany, but we should have the same than portugal.
