Socially, the relation is comparable to whites and blacks in America, or even more accurately to North and South England. Ashkenazim are richer, more educated, and live in cities, while Mizrahim are poorer and live in the periphery. The big difference from the US or England, however, is that Ashkenazim are leftist liberals, and Mizrahim are religious conservatives. Imagine a fusion of /pol/ and tumblr: Complaining about white privilege, degeneracy, Eurocentrism, atheism, and Islam all at the same time, that is your average Mizrahi activist.
