Anki counts reviews according to number of answers, not unique cards.

Yup, there's your problem, 50 new cards a day. Unless you're re-reviewing all forgotten cards multiple times throughout the day (assuming you're using default interval settings), you're not going to retain that many cards for the next day.

Anyway, the number of mature cards is displayed at the bottom of your statistics page, or on the last statistics page if you're using ankidroid. I'm not sure how long an interval needs to be before Anki considers a card "mature," but it seems to be somewhere around the 1-month mark. Truthfully, you should be able to read simple phrases before you start Core, since you should have encountered basic vocabulary when you studied grammar first.

So part of the reason I'm hitting 500 is that I have been pulling in the entire deck every day from inception, and try to review as many previous cards as possible

No, you just don't press "again" if it's in the new group. New cards become learning queue cards after the first time you see them and never go back to the new card queue.

>>
>>78962949
>>78962972
Like I said before, you really ought to be able to read simple phrases LONG before you start core. As far as reading in general goes, I was able to start reading Yotsubato!, slowly and painfully, at around 600 mature cards. This was after having completed an introductory Japanese learning program called Human Japanese, which I studied with before I came to DJT.
>>
>>78963122
It fucks up your stats and wastes several seconds. It doesn't do any good for your ability to remember the card; the "Again" timer is too short.
>>
>>78963091
He's not right. Anki is about spacing, not about regulated addition of new cards. The "purpose" of the program is long term retention of things that have already been added. Your habits in adding cards are completely personal.
>>
>>78963173
This guy just said he's reviewing the entire deck every day, if that doesn't defeat the purpose of "spaced repetition" I don't know what does.
>>
>>78963196
He's not reviewing the entire deck every day. He's "pulling in" the deck every day. There's a very big difference.
>>
>>78963236
Sorry, I'm probably not being clear enough. I am reviewing the entire deck every day, by making a custom study deck and reviewing all previously forgotten cards, creating an ever increasing deck
>>
>>78963275
As long as you do normal reviews first, that doesn't defeat the purpose of Anki at all. It's stupid, but it's not against spaced repetition's philosophy.

>>
>>78963332
Reviewing is a passive process where the cards are already there. "Pulling in" is the act that constitutes putting the cards somewhere. This could be anything: adding all available new cards, doing a custom study, etc.

So you're saying you know the words but it takes you too long to think of it? That means either

-Read more, but also don't worry so much about the precise meaning when doing anki (the reading is more important)
>>
>>78966264
>So you're saying you know the words but it takes you too long to think of it
I still forget a lot even if I had no time limit, but it's much worse now (sub-50%). But my review time is half of what it used to be even with 1.5x the amount of reviews I was doing back then.

> but also don't worry so much about the precise meaning when doing anki
I don't know how strict people are with this but I mostly press "again" if I don't recall all the meanings.

e.g. today I think I only recalled "attention" for 注意 instead of "attention, care, watch out", and for 得意 I forgot "pride" and only recalled "one's forte, customer" so I hit again. I'd also press "again" (or "hard" at best) if I recalled, for example, something like "grand scale" instead of "large scale" for 大型.

Sometimes I can also understand a word from looking at it without translating it to english (and I've forgotten the english translation), and I'll press again for that too.
>>
>>78966396
>I don't know how strict people are with this but I mostly press "again" if I don't recall all the meanings.

Yeah that's stupid. Often these words only have one real meaning and the english words given are just different approximations. JAPANESE IS NOT ENGLISH.. You'll learn the real meanings through reading - your goal with anki is just to decrease the likelyhood you need to look the word up when you come across it in reading.
>>
What does くらい mean when it's attached to the end of a word?
>>
>>78966529
Also, for the words that do have lots of actually unique meanings, it's even sillier to learn them all because they are often idiomatic (かける) or some are much more common than others
>>
>>78966529
>>78966579
I'm just worried I'll assign too general meanings to a word and I'll end up having words thinking they mean the same thing.

e.g. the words 割れる, 壊れる and 折れる appear fairly far apart in core. If I only assigned thought of something in general "breaking" for these 3, I wouldn't know the difference.

But for 折る and 折れる which only appeared for the first time in the last week, I've had to press again every day so far because I always forget at least one meaning.
>>
>>78966550
Depends on the context.
to the degree of ~
about (roughly) ~
>>
>>78966676
>e.g. the words 割れる, 壊れる and 折れる appear fairly far apart in core. If I only assigned thought of something in general "breaking" for these 3, I wouldn't know the difference.

It's fine to think they are approximately the same thing at first. You'll figure out most differences through reading. You can also get stricter with time. Right now, you're wasting too much time on anki already probably that could be spend reading (or doing more words in anki so you can read sooner). But when you've run out of new words and are down to 20 minutes a day it's a lot easier to be stricter.
>>
>>78966676
>I'm just worried I'll assign too general meanings to a word and I'll end up having words thinking they mean the same thing.
don't worry about that, man
as you come across these words in a variation of contexts "in the wild", you'll pick up on nuance
treat vocab in Anki like a grabbing point on a climbing wall and use reading to actually climb the wall
much easier this way
>>
憧れは理解から最も遠い感情だよ

Something about understanding or admiration?
>>
>>78967610
Admiration is the furthest emotion from understanding (logic).
>>
>>78966676
There is no problem in learning shatter, break and destroy as synonyms until you can really tell the difference.

Go for general meanings, unless it changes meanings.
For instance, if "large scale" means using big metrics but "grand scale" means kinda like "the grand scheme of things", that's a fairly distant meaning and shouldn't be considered the same.

You have to get the pronunciation right and the meaning just right enough, since nuance will come with reading.

It is as if the Japanese written language sees meaning-delivery and pronunciation-delivery as two separate goals with far greater focus on the former, where as most other languages have these two more or less equally balanced or not separated at all.

Do you not think-out the kanji readings "out loud" when you read them?
