Now that I'm thinking about it, the darkness on the horizon and the prospect of leaving your community probably spelled death. And it only made sense to explore if you were financed and supported in other ways by a monarch for example.

Well maybe in Asia or in the americas
Since Europe was constantly at war you always had some sort of military presence in your borders
But still walking in these huge countries you will probably just walk for days or months before you find more nothing

It would make sense if there was something waiting for you behind those dark cold and rainy forests (a monastery or other shelter where you know people). They did have guesthouses I guess where you could get by if you had some money (possibly exchange with merchants?). The complexities of those times are hard to grasp for the modern person.
