Ian Brady and Myra Hindley would cruise around in their car and pick up young children, then brady would take them out into the moors and rape-murder them. myra hindley was particularly hated because she spent a lot of her time in prison claiming she was innocent even though she was fully complicit in all of their murders

doctor who deliberately killed many of his patients by lethal injection, one of the most prolific serial killers in history by pure bodycount, probably somewhere around 250. got away with it for 20 years. killed himself in prison

This isn't particularly sadistic and nasty compared to some other cases but it is very well known and controversial in New Zealand, basically an entire household was murdered except for their 22 year old son, who was charged for the murder
Around 20 years later there was a retrial and he was acquitted, although pretty much everyone I've talked to believes that he's guilty
On a slightly /x/ note there was a message left on the family computer after the murders saying "sorry, you are the only one who deserved to stay"
