Non meme this, the conditions that allowed for men like Byron, Wilde or Wells were produced by a surplus which relied on both the British advantage in early industrialization and their peak as a colonial empire.

There isn't much of a chance today for a large leisurely class allowing for a significant number of its memebrs to dedicate themselves to obscure personal interests like archeology or botany. At least that was Asimov's hypothesis on why the Brits produced so many brilliant men.
