Europe is less culturally and genetically distinct to the Middle East than the Middle East is to China or India. There's no reason to group everybody in one massive autistic fest known as 'Asia'.

If we look at it historically then Asians are commonly referred to as Persians, Indians and Chinese. If we look at it from a European perspective than Indians and East/SE Asians are both Asians. If we look at it from an American (thus global) perspective the only real Asians are East and South East Asians.

I kind of agree with the "contrarians" in this thread. Asia should refer to only East and South East Asians while Middle Easterners and Indians should be their own thing.
