Many of them were Syrian refugees, which is fair enough, but now tons of economic migrants from other countries have taken advantage of the situation and travelled, en masse, into Europe.

The biggest current problem in 2017 is Africans travelling to Libya (north coast of Africa), and getting in shitty little boats to take them across the Mediterranean into Italy.
