What was the best Eastern Bloc/USSR state to live under and what were the worst?

I've talked to older Hungarian and polish co-workers who said that they lived basically fine lives with a good standard of living in Poland and Hungary, who also told me that Russia and East Germany were fucking complete and utter shitholes. Do others who know about the time and region or lived there, agree with that sentiment?
