Scotland was heavily in debt before the act of union, with all of the failed colonial efforts and whatnot. We got bailed out once they became British ventures and now enjoy large monetary injections, more than we pay to the British central government in taxes with the added bonus of autonomous government. It's a pretty sweet deal.

Because we're an inherent part of the UK. It's not called the UNITED Kingdom for nothing. The union began with Scotland and England, and together with the Welsh and Irish we forged the greatest empire the world has ever seen. It's really rather symbolic.

It might be hard to understand the Scottish mindset as someone whose people and country were a part of, yet no represented by, another, not so great Empire, but we actually have a fair amount of power in the union and basically have home rule.
Remaining part of the UK gives us quite a bit of power upon the world stage, somthing we couldn't do as some small, irrelevant country, such as Slovenia.

Before Ireland was incorporated into the Union in 1801, it was the United Kingdom of Great Britian, representing the union of the crown of Scotland and the crown of England into one, single entity. Ireland has always played second fiddle to the rest of the UK.
