A lot of it has to do with the prices that most local shops can't compete with. Your average breakfast (like an egg sandwich) is a few quid at McDonald's whereas a cafe can often be upwards of £5 or more, and you don't always know what you're getting by comparison.
Really it's the same reason fast food multinationals are successful anywhere else.
