there are several things preventing this from happening. chicanos are children of mexican immigrants who come from poor rural parts of mexico and immigrated in the 80s/90s mostly, so the mexican culture we know is that of rural mexico from decades ago. second, we grew up in very different countries with very different experiences. despite looking the same we almost foreign to each other. lastly is the language barrier. while there are many mexican americans who speak spanish fluently, there are equally as many who speak it with errors, and accent, or don't speak it at all. whenever i talk with mexicans online i usually feel self conscious. i feel like they think i'm a stereotypical poor immigrant from oaxaca who can't speak spanish correctly, so i prefer to talk with south americans because i feel like they won't judge me as hard.
