DID YOU KNOW? That "greater" New Zealand is composed of lots of different things?
The "Realm of New Zealand" is all that territory over which the queen reigns in the capacity of her title of "Queen of New Zealand". It includes the New Zealand mainland, and other possessions.
The five "primary" territories are:
New Zealand (proper),
Ross Dependency (the Antarctic claim),
Cook Islands,
Niue,
Tokelau.
Cook Islands and Niue are semi-independent-but-not-really-sorta. In certain contexts, they are actually counted as separate states, but of course they're just memes for the most part. Tokelau is literally-not-independent, and they have a history of voting and consenting to remain dependent on New Zealand, which makes UN people buttmad because Muh Colonialism or something.
After these, there's a bunch of uninhabited minor outlying islands which are legally part of New Zealand proper, and are administered directly from Wellington. More on those next!
>antarctic claims
The minor outlying islands are described in pic related. There's nine groups.
The Chatham Islands have a few hundred residents, and their own special local government. The uninhabited Solander Islands are administered as part of a region, since they're close to the mainland. The other seven are not administered as part of any region or local government, being directly Wellington's affair.
These islands were a major hazard for ships back in the day, and so NZ installed emergency caches of shelter, food and supplies on some of these islands, for anyone unlucky enough to get shipwrecked.
The property of having lots of uninhabited, weird goofy islands spread throughout the pacific is a trait which NZ shares in common with the USA, post-WWII.
But that's not all! It gets even MORE autistic!
In New Zealand, the county-level things can have territory in multiple state/province level things! One county called "Taupo" has territory in four different regions!
Oh those goofy New Zealanders!
