If you actually look at the research, men and women tend to be more attracted to and settle down long-term with people of equal socioeconomic status, level of education, level of attractiveness, values, etc. This is an extremely robust effect. Women of higher socioeconomic status also tend to be much less concerned with 'marrying up' than poors for obvious reasons. It is very likely that the 'high standards' meme only accounts for only a small amount of the birthrate decline, unless far fewer men than women are also obtaining degrees and working good jobs.
