Before I lived in the west coast I had this romantic image about Indians and how they were really spiritual beings and didn't care too much about materialistic stuff. In a way, India needs this strong authoritarian/populist rule to advance. Being more like China is what India has moved towards under Modi, and that's mostly what has improved the governance.
