Mapuches arent really natives to Argentina.
They were natives of southern Chile, who expanded into what would be Argentina in the 1600s only after they learned how to become horse riders.
They conquered the natives of Argentine Patagonia who were hunter gatherers who ran on foot, Tehuelches, and "mapuchified" them.

Basically, they had a peace treaty with the king of spen. They had the territories from the Bio Bio river to the south and the whole Patagonia and lived relatively peacefully and traded as independent nations until de independence (that's why the last Spanish royalist resistance in Chile was based in Chiloe island). Later Chile conquered those territories by force, and formally annexed them. This is different from what happened with the northernest 2 regions (which also weren't Chile proper) that belonged to Peru and Bolivia but they gave their territories voluntarily to us, with treaties. With the Mapuche there were no treaties, so it's considered an ilegal ocupation of an independent nation. Later we gave the eastern Patagonia to the argies but the problem is that if it wasn't legitimately ours, we didn't have any right to give it to anyone, hence it's mapuche territory. So it's kind of a predicament right now
