How do Englishmen here feel about the Old English language?

It really is quite beautiful, and I say this with as much objectivity and dispassion as possible. Especially the way the diphthongs elide through one another. If you get the chance to hear someone speak it who knows what they're doing it's a real treat.

Is it meant to be spoken with a more Scottish/Northerner-esque flair on words? It seems like some of the hardcore historians and linguists I watch speak it on YouTube tend to give the vowels that very northern British ting, along with hard R's and such.

It's quite true that Northern and lowland Scots accents were much more conservative than others and retained pronunciations that are truer to Old English than the modern equivalents. In my region, people speaking in very broad dialect will still say things like "gan yem" (going home) or "me hoos" (my house), virtually identical to the Old English forms even in non-Anglian dialects.
