Minimum wage is bad for the economy and it's bad for low skill workers. It kills off any and all endeavors worth less than the minimum wage. Which leads to outsourcing, automation and even entire businesses moving offshore. It's much better that low-skill workers get to work for a little less than it is for them to live of off social security. Not only is it better for the economy but it's more dignifying than being essentially a serf to the state.

Besides, we shouldn't be centrally planning prices. That's what we have a market for. Setting prices is one of the thing that the market is surprisingly good at doing, regardless of lefties moaning for just about everything it does.

Unions aren't much better. They inevitably end up in bed with politicians which perverts their initial, rather noble, objective. That's what have happened in Sweden, where the biggest union - LO - is essentially a front to the social democratic party and has become corrupted from the inside by the amount of power they wield.

If unions are to exist they must not receive any preferential political treatment whatsoever. They should just be an organization like any other. Furthermore they must be made to remain politically neutral as it always end up corrupting them.

I'm taking a road trip to South Carolina and Tennessee in a few weeks so I'll have to get back to you on that. I've been to Louisiana and Texas which were pleasant. New Orleans is a depressed shithole but it has interesting "culture". Generally, just don't go into the ghetto, enjoy the food and atmosphere, and you'll be fine. It is similar to the rest of the US. Scenery isn't as impressive as California but the rolling hills of the Appalachians are bucolic and calm.
