I use dict.cc as german-english, even though I'm not a native english speaker.

English and german are so similar it makes more sense than trying to translate straight to finnish.
>>

It's the case for the ones I mentioned too. I learn English by reading Wikipedia and learning to program, not by listening to gangsta rap. Two birds, one stone, etc
my life is the very definition of fun btw

I don't know about Finnish, but the English-German on there is really good I think, so if you are good with German I can understand trying it. It does fairly well pointing out the different context for different words/phrases

What is everyone's reason for learning a language?

I am a boring horrible prick who's suicidal and I want to learn Mandarin so I can teach Chinese abroad and maybe delay my suicide.
>>
>>77883443
Sorry, I misunderstood. Has anyone actually tried that Rise language learning program? I agree with the thing that Duolingo is really more a vocab supplement than anything, but I take classes at Uni so I don't know of any free resources to learn grammar and stuff. I wonder if there is a free uni course material available online; I know I see tidbits when I search some grammar online from universities

Also put that when learning vocab you learn the gender with it, and to make an adjective ending chart for the different cases

They hate the parasites, but are actually OK with Romanians who either stay in their country and work, or come here, learn the language and contribute to society. But the ones who beg for money to the point it's become organized criminal networks are hated. We're aware not every Romanian is like this though; I even know of some guys who went to Romania because med school is easier there or something.
Another thing I've noticed is that Gypsies (the gangs who roam the land not even speaking the language, stealing anything they can for quick bucks and even pimp their girls) are often romanticized in movies, songs and novels; no idea why. Lefties love them and jerk off to the dramatic side of it; while alt-righters are disgusted by it.

Hey, so I worked on this.
The people from /djt/ have mixed feelings about Heisig but other than that they don't have any problems with it.
>>
>>77891606
There's a lot of /djt/-specific memes in there, pal. You sure that's not too much for outsiders?

Also I don't think going straight from learning the kana for a day or two into reading is the best method.

In terms of RTK, I think it's more important to tell people what they're getting into rather than whether or not they should use it. I was a big supporter of it but after a while I realized it was a huge waste of time.

I started learning Spanish a month ago, and around Christmas have an opportunity to go to Spain for a week. I'm studying on average two hours per day, do you think I'll be able to understand anything by then? Maybe be able to get around a bit? Or will it be too soon? I'd be about 5-6 months into my study by then.
>>
>>77891673
memes?
There's only dekinai-chan and that's as a joke. So people know when they see her.

The rest are what i used and I found out on my own from sites, youtube and different people though maybe some came from /djt/.

I guess it might not be best, but you learn as you read. Spending a week or so learning the alphabet or hangul or any language is pretty bad. Since you see them in action when reading you are better adapted compared to somebody who just spent ages looking at the same characters for a week.

RTK I agree it's not for everybody but I learnt 2000 kanji in 3 months and wwas hopelessly lost without it. I struggled for ages drilling kanji for months to no avail. It really helped me out, sure there are other methods but that worked a lot for me, it's a mixed bag really, and optional.

I'm 31 and only speak English, just starting to learn Spanish. It's great that this thread has multilingual people rather than all neophytes since they have experience to share with us.

Life tip as a 30+ year old: Try not to compare yourself to others. Instead just know where you are at, and set achievable goals within your own bounds of what you are capable of, and keep improving constantly in life. Every year pick something to really work on for self-improvement. Language, health, family, whatever.

yeah this is hard. I want to learn Latin, Spanish, and Mandarin for different reasons. I see Latin as a gateway to all European languages, I need to self-teach myself Spanish to test out of a class for college, and I want to learn Mandarin because I want to to teach English in China.

If you're doing a traditional four year you'll end up having a few semesters where you need extra classes to fill in the minimum hour count, I'd say don't bother testing out of Spanish language and just take Mandarin. What I do is put the ones I don't know in my left pocket, then pull a few out and learn them, then keep adding to the stack as I learn more. Once I know something extremely well, I put that in my right pocket, and so on until the end of the day - then I put them all back in one stack and go through again.

That's wrong, it would only help with romance languages.
If you are interested in Latin and Spanish (as well as the other romance languages) then this will surely interest you.

(he compares it to vulgar latin though, but it's still pretty interesting)

I'm a newb so probably shouldn't be commenting on learning Spanish, but, from what I've read if you want to learn a new language density of study does matter. So if you spend 200 hours over five years, it's not as good as 200 hours in five months.

I suspect if you really said "fuck I'm going to learn this" and spent two hours every day for the rest of the year you'd be really good by 2018.
>>
I'm wondering: would it be relevant for /lang/ to perhaps make a quick tl;dr comparison of the most common memorization tools (anki, memrise, quizlet, etc.), giving the pros and cons of each?
>>
>>77902860
I think it varies from person to person. Anki looks great to me, but I couldn't get accents to work on a Mac, so I'm using Quizlet and enjoy it. I'm pay 20 bucks a year or some shit for the Long Term Learning feature but it's really good - I'm even using it for increasing my product knowledge at work.

Memrise isn't a flashcard app you can program, is it? I thought it was a defined program.
>>
>>77902938
>Memrise isn't a flashcard app you can program, is it?
You can't customize courses which were made by others (probably the single biggest disadvantage of memrise), however you can create your own courses (and you don't even have to make them public). You can also add audio and images, but you can't add additional fields (probably the second biggest disadvantage).

The big advantage which memrise has imo is the fact that all answers have a timer.

Oversimplified a little too much.

KKLC > Heisig
Tae Kim > Imabi (specially for beginners)
Don't go reading after learning kana, unless it's Yotsubato (comes with a reading pack);
Don't do Anki "before step 1", that will fuck you up.

Ideally you could finish Core2k and Tae Kim before reading on your own to ease the burden of looking everything up in a dictionary, could take around 2~3 months.

Speaking of which, you haven't mentioned Core and/or mining words.

>The people from /djt/ have mixed feelings about Heisig but other than that they don't have any problems with it.
Are you referring to the /jp/ DJT people? Becausa I haven't seen this posted on /int/. And I find it really questionable that /jp/ wouldn't have sperged out REALLY HARD about your guide, specially since you're recommending Heisig.

Making own flashcards vs Using premade flashcards of common vocab.
Which is more effective?

Is it possible to learn 2 languages at once? I'm considering learning French + Arabic/Japanese. 30 mins on each language per day.
>>
>>77914353
In my experience, learning Japanese, the first 2k words or so was better learning from a pre-made deck.

After that, reading was the best for me. The context was far superior.
>>
>>77915058
Yes, but not at 1h/day total.

New languages you spend 1h/day EACH. Intermediate languages you spend 2h/day. Advanced 3-4+/day.

So if you're just starting French and Japanese (I understand why you'd need to learn Arabic LOL), you should study 2h/day.

After 2-3 months though, that'll increase to 4-6h/day. If you can swing it, great. Polyglot you shall become. If not, just focus on one. (Japanese takes a LOOOOOONG time)
>>
>>77914909

In the beginning there's so much to learn 100% of your time is spent learning new things.

As you progress, you have to add more time since more of the material is already learned and the concepts get harder and therefore take longer to learn.

You certainly can spend 8 hours/day on day 1 if you want, but you're probably going to burn out pretty quickly unless it's your job or something.

Is there any reason to learn Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese? I have been studying French because that was my first foreign language, and French people seem to be ever present on the internet and media, so I'm just wondering if there's much good media or reason to learn the other romance languages.

Japanese is of course alluring in that regard.
>>
>>77924148
Reading philosophical text in the original language it was written is often quoted as a good reason to learn German, but it also goes for French for Descartes or Rousseau. Descartes wrote his texts both in French and Latin so that goes for Latin learners too.
>>
>>77924148
If you live in America, Spanish is pretty obvious. Aside from that, there are a ton of interesting Spanish-speaking vacation destinations and if you like the women, there's that as well.

If you've already got a good grasp on French, Spanish wouldn't be that hard for you.

Italian and Portuguese are almost completely useless unless you like talking to the BR? BR? fags when you play online games or really like reading about supercars.

Some people claim different languages make different personalities emerge in people. Some people will be more arrogant, extroverted or flirty in certain languages, for instance.

In your case, it might be the opposite: you are already sedimented and cynical in English towards the outside world, but having Japanese as a not-so-hardened language yet in your brain makes you focus on the ideas and on the emotion, instead of focusing on the writing style, the writer or underlying themes like "which agenda is this kike reporter is trying to push this time?!?!".

I for one have grown sick of people and don't socialize, but I'm sure if I went to Japan tomorrow I'd be the most extroverted, friend-making guy, because of this linguistic barrier that avoids me from having a too realistic perception of their culture/true personalities.
It's like detaching yourself from your language makes you idealize things more.

That doesn't happen to me in English, though, it's a language I've become desensitized about already. Whereas some really simple Nipponese lines can warm my heart here and there.

Anybody here ever created an account on VK?

I'm increasingly feeling as though I'll have to create one sooner or later (it's really hugely central in the Russian internet, it would seem), but I already despise having as much as a facebook account; having yet another (((social media))) account would simply make my stomach turn I think. If I want to say "I'm buying one?" in Spanish, is it:
Yo compro uno
Yo compro una

...if the thing I'm buying is a lamp. Does that mean I'd use una since it's a lámpara? or am I just saying the number so it's uno?

I think "yo compro uno/a" is I buy one, versus "Voy a comprar una/o" is I'm going to buy one.

I guess where I'm lost is if it is uno or una? If it's a lamp I'm buying is it una? Then if it's a glass (vaso) I'm buying uno?

There's practically nothing available on the Hill version (IIRC it represents only 6% of all Mari speakers). For those interested in the history of the Volga region, here's a fun fact which I learned recently: the origin of the dialectal separation between Hill and Meadow Mari is that the Hill Maris were part of the Grand Duchy of Moscow whereas the Meadow Maris were in the territory of the Golden Horde.

>>
>>77943878
>Squelette de tabarnac de viarge de saint sacrement d' Crisse de ciboire d'ostie d' câlisse
Two improvements that I would suggest:

1) It's much more common to include the noun at the end of the string of profanity. Therefore,
>tabarnac de viarge de saint sacrement d' Crisse de ciboire d'ostie d' câlisse de squelette

2) If you insist on keeping the word at the beginning, then it's better to avoid ending with "câlisse" as the last profanity, seeing as it's much more common for it to accompany a noun. The most common way to end would probably be "de marde/merde", therefore:
>Squelette de tabarnac de viarge de saint sacrement d' Crisse de ciboire d'ostie d' câlisse de marde

tl;dr
>A crucial point to note here is that in learning Persian, learning the colloquial form is a necessity. If you want to communicate with ordinary people, you should learn the spoken form of the language. If you talk in formal and written language, everybody will understand you but it sounds more weird than what you probably think. Tehrani accent is fully understood and appreciated all over Iran, and it is not uncommon in Afghanistan either, thanks to Afghan returned refugees and Iranian cinema and TV productions.
>>
>>77944489
Aha, thanks
>>
>>77944527
One more note:
This doesn't mean that learning formal is useless. It's just that you probably should learn both, and generally just apply a slightly different set of "grammar" (technically not just grammar but also changes to spelling/pronunciation and dropping of some syllables)
For a clear example, the English wiktionary has the conjugation tables for many persian verbs, in both formal and colloquial form.
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%DB%8C%D8%A7%D8%AF_%DA%AF%D8%B1%D9%81%D8%AA%D9%86#Persian
>>
>>77944441
>By the way, does "marde" have the same vowel as the a in "la patte"
yep

Also, in case you didn't know, there's also a third "a" vowel in QC French: the a in "pas".
>>
>>77944628
>This doesn't mean that learning formal is useless.
Yes, I know. Actually I'm more interested in reading books, newspapers etc. It's just that this diglossy is quite intimidating at the beginning, like the concept itself. Some other aspects too, like the ortography, for example, ie. reading is relatively easy, but writing is very difficult.
>>
>>77944938
A way that helps me cope with the concept is that the official language rules were just put down ages ago, and nobody bothered to update them. (Initially because formal was just the language, then because it was the language of courts and diplomats, and eventually it would mean favouring one dialect over another into "official status")

Consider it like what if polish kept it's written/formal language like it was anywhere between 200-600 years ago, but the spoken language evolved as it did anyway. (I have no clue how much polish changed in the past centuries, hence the wide gap)

That's my point, here the sociolinguistic situation is totally different because we are descendants of a republic dominated by aristocrats who then became disowned by various occupants and mixed with lower classes so today even former peasants role-play as nobles, we speak literary Polish, we usually have aristocratic-like surnames with the "-ski" or "-cki" endings (it's something like the German "von" or the French "de"). We also don't have distinct regional vernaculars due to other historical reasons. In Persio-sphere it's the other way round - there are various sociolinguistic "strata" (vertically), plus there are various regional dialects (horizontally).

Anyway, thanks for all answers and one more time - you should block access to this webdisc (if it's yours), I don't know how it works in your country, but here there are those firms that look for people sharing materials and then harass them using various legal procedures. I know that it's also a big problem in Germany.
>>
>>77945852
They're not my materials, they're just part of the resources this thread has gathered over time

I don't think I appreciated how close Vancouver English is to the standard language until I started learning Quebec French...
People here often pronounce "egg" and "bag" in a funny way, sometimes conjugate "take" as "take took tooken", and sometimes say "me too" when they should say "me neither". There's also a few lexical items that rarely get written in formal contexts like "attaboy!" and "iunno". However, such things are few and far between.
I don't know if it's because native speakers here just happen to speak in a very standard way, or because standard English has been brought down to be much closer to spoken English. Maybe the latter.
Some school teachers insist you should always write "is not" and "do not" instead of the contracted forms "isn't" and "don't", but anybody who's ever had a look at a newspaper or at academic writing knows it isn't true. Contracted forms are well accepted in writing...
