I, personally, abhor gender roles - an opinion not popular in my country. People don't have enough problems so they blow the few they have out of proportion and create new ones.

If a parent have kids that they struggle to feed, house and give gifts hat is their priority. If those aren't problems for them they look for smaller problems and risk becoming a helicopter parent. When this is the case they try to find major solutions to minor problems.

In this case the parents are afraid that their kids will suffer mental problems from being forced into being "someone they are not" and let them "be themselves", most likely by encouraging behavior out of the norm, thinking that by default that is what the kids want.

What is common whit these kinds of "problems" is that the scientific community does not take them seriously and so the "experts" on these subjects are soccermoms who have "read up" on it online. In other words a different expression of the same mentality anti-vaxers have in the US.
