itt we thank Pekka for solving world hunger

PИA Hoвocти https://ria.ru/science/20170801/1499536377.html

Finnish scientists have created a device that turns water and carbon dioxide from the air into edible protein granules and, according to the developers, will help solve the problem of hunger on Earth, the online edition qz.com reports.
"From the practical point of view, everything that is needed for the production of this protein food is contained in the air." In the future, devices based on our technology can be installed in deserts or other corners of the Earth, whose inhabitants are threatened by hunger. Place houses and use them as needed, "says Juha-Pekka Pitkanen from the Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland.

>says Juha-Pekka Pitkanen

In recent years, scientists are actively trying to find a way to convert atmospheric CO2 into biofuels and other useful substances. For example, in July last year, physicists from Chicago created a solar battery that uses light energy directly for splitting CO2 and producing carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and in October their colleagues from the National Laboratory in Oak Ridge created a catalyst that converts carbon dioxide into regular alcohol.
Pitkanen and his colleagues came up with how to create a device that turns air into much more complex organic compounds - molecules of proteins and sugars. To do this, scientists have gone to the trick - they "assigned" this task to microbes that can absorb CO2 and turn it into components of their own cells.

When the microbes become sufficiently large, scientists pass current through the nutrient medium, as a result of which the bacteria die, and their remains decompose into individual molecules of sugars and proteins. Accordingly, if the resulting solution is dried, then a set of granules rich in proteins and carbohydrates will arise.

The main problem of this system so far is that it works quite leisurely - one gram of protein it produces for about two weeks. Now Pitkanen is working to accelerate this process and create larger versions of the bioreactor, which could produce several kilos of protein each day.
"In comparison with traditional agriculture, this method of food production does not require special soil and other conditions necessary for growing agricultural crops." We can produce these proteins in an absolutely automatic mode and do not require pesticides or toxic fertilizers to grow them. Environment and the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, "concludes Jero Ahola, a colleague of Pitkanen.

Why the fuck would anyone want to do that?
