I think it's the complete opposite. While what you said may hold true for politics, it's not the case for Americans as a people. I think that it just happens that the extremes of society - as OP put it - are very vocal minorities so it's easy to take the piece for a whole. My understanding is that most Americans are moderate in all possible aspects of life and quite possibly the purest definition of "average man" (or woman while we are at it). They're really just fine.

I have a positive opinion about american people, they are usually nice and friendly people.
My dad did a road trip in the US with friends during the "french bashing" period in the early 2000s, he travelled republican states like Texas and Arizona and he told me he never met anyone being cold or rude to him.

However they have a lot of clichés about other countries that can be annoying sometimes and they like to exaggerate the popular beliefs they think to be true.
For some reason they think we french hates them for some reason while most of us like America or don't give a fuck.
