I am a JAPANESE.
There is a manga called Grand Blue(ぐらんぶる) that is about college life. Lots of drinking and spending time with friends. One character is an otaku like you. You might like it.

from all the Japanese people I've talked to, Japanese high school is the tough part and then University is laid back. Compared to U.S. university at least. One of my Japanese teachers at my college liked to complain about lazy Japanese college students who never study. But I've never studied at a Japanese university, so I really have no idea!
