It can also have a nuance of "isn't that ridiculous" or something like that. "Purposefully going out in the rain, that's crazy!"

If you use it like this 俺なんてできるわけないだろう, it has a similar nuance but more obviously negative. "Me, of all people? Of course I can't do it."

after much deliberation (a couple of shitty review days) I decided to start individual kanji reading recall study alongside vocab revision

the deck I'm using has the kanji on the front and readings as well as a key word on the back. the deck has some errors so I'm checking each new card with a kanji dictionary online, only bothering with jouyou readings

can anyone else share their own experience doing individual kanji study alongside vocab?
>>
>>77742172
Do report your gains. I've been studying names and, although it's not the same, you don't have much to work with since it's not vocabulary, only sounds. It's kinda helping me to pay more attention to kanji rather than just going for the meaning.
I'll start KKLC in January.

condition. close to それなら
>>
>>77744616
>It's kinda helping me to pay more attention to kanji rather than just going for the meaning.
that's kinda the main reason why I've started. during reviews I kept making stupid errors where I knew what the word means but mixed up kanji readings, almost in a dyslexic manner at times
the hope is that by studying individual kanji on the side it will force my brain to be more 'kanji aware' and not make dumb mistakes during vocab reviews and while reading

that's a long time time away but if I'm still doing individual kanji study alongside vocab then there will be a lot to report on

Sorry for the late reply

At it's core, applying to a japanese university is not much difference from applying to an american university. However, if you don't already have a bachelor's degree, you may be forced to take the EJU (Entrance exam, the same exam the actual japanese take). However, if your college is english specific, they may not do this if your existing GPA is good enough.

The problem with attending japanese university is entirely a financial one. If you're reading this post, and wondering how to do this, chances are you won't qualify for the MEXT. It has an acceptance rate of about 10%

In order to pass the MEXT, you need to figure out a research project for yourself, then pass a 3-hour english exam followed by a 3-hour japanese exam whose difficulty is about N2-level. And you need high grades in those.

Then, you have an interview where you sit with a table of lawyers trying to find a way to deny you the scholarship. This is where you gloat about your career, maybe your affiliation with japanese organizations, and explain any connections to Japan that you might have.

The test is administered in Washington D.C so on top of Japanese lawyers you might have actual american lawyers interpreting your methods.

MEXT is an extremely grueling and extremely stressful process, so you probably want at least 2 years of research/practice for it, but being accepted in MEXT gets you into Japan for your master's degree.

To put this into perspective, MEXT accepts about 4,000 people from around the world each year. That means you're not competing with just americans, you're competing with the entire world. You gotta know your shit and you gotta be taking those JLPT's while also participating/helping with any japanese organizations you might have located near you.

But with enough determination, this is a gateway into Japan.

Heisig's RTK

Pros:
>Easy to begin and learn the first thousand kanji relatively quickly
>Learning meanings first will make it easier to learn vocabulary and readings later
>Logical ordering of kanji at least in terms of familiarity with radicals and retention

Cons:
>Not immediately useful if you wait to learn vocabulary
>Often mnemonics are a nuisance rather than helpful and lead to learning wrong meanings
>Meanings themselves aren't always the most common or the best approximation, since Heisig claims to base it on the character's 'primitive meaning'
>Often assigns a completely random meaning to a character to help with learning other kanji (does this a lot with radicals/primitives)
>Learning English translations for Japanese meanings means the nuance of a character is often lost
>>
>>77760191
>Does 方 in this case indicate the "side of the family"?

Yes. But there's nothing specific about its usage to family. There are two grandmothers, the "one" she is going to is her mother's mother. You could just the same use 方 when picking a brand of ice cream or for any other kind of comparison.

>Maybe I'm just an uncultured American but I thought a lot of places had four seasons...

Japan has a philosophical understanding behind seasons, complete with seasonal mindsets.

America used to do this back in the day, leading to awesome poetry by the likes of Robert Frost, but this has declined over the years. America stopped giving a shit about the seasons other than the changes in weather, but this hasn't stopped in Japan

to this day, there is still extreme symbolism and attachment with the japanese mindset to the concept of seasons.

四季. is sort of a form of patriotism, like "HEY! WE GIVE A SHIT ABOUT SEASONS!"

nobody outside of japan actually cares though

But I don't disagree. We have our symbolism as well, we just don't go HAM on it like Japan does. For example: barbecues, kids playing in the spray of an open fire hydrant, long days that never seem to end. Evoke anything? Could it be the middle of winter, perhaps?

wait until you find out the origin of the term 'Kamikaze' when used to define 'suicide soldier'
>>
>>77774393
actually i'll elaborate

Small history listen

As you should know, Kamikaze means 'Divine winds', i mean, the name is literally kami kaze, or god wind, so it's pretty easy to see. The term was coined when the Mongols were destroyed by the winds twice, Japan thought the ancestors were protecting them from assault, and so Kamikaze was born

In the world wars, when japanese suicide pilots became popular, the Press, or ((them)) needed a way to coin these suicide pilots as BRAVE HEROES

thus, they directly compared the suicide pilots to the divine winds, saying "HEY! THESE GUYS ARE BRAVE HEROES PROTECTING US! THEY -ARE- THE KAMIKAZE!"

and so kamikaze started to mean 'suicide pilot' more than 'divine wind', because of ((them))

but the site has been neutered since then and the chatrooms i met her at have been removed.

you're just gonna have to find some of the places japanese girls congregate online, or throw a dart with lang8. really depends on what you're going for. lang8 for normies, online browser games for the more-internet-specific ones.

For the record, i'm pretty good at talking to girls regardless of culture, however, japanese girls are a bit different from western girls, you have to change your approaches slightly.

Well I have had a few girlfriends from playing online mmo games with them.
But it's hard to look for them, let alone get close to them in certain games. For that I suggest just playing casual until you find someone (on a japanese only game of course) but I think I just got lucky since I was just looking for friends in the first place. Twitter helped a bit with that too.

The girl from the picture I met on the iPhone app "HelloTalk." She randomly asked to use Line one day which is where the pic is from.

Not sure how good of advice this is but that wraps up my experience.

>>77806003
Spanish shares over 70% of its vocabulary roots with English and holds a "tier 1" difficulty in learning, because it's a rather close Indo-european Language. It requires 600 hours of study to acquire proficiency.

Japanese is a Tier 5 language, with a minimum of 2200 hours and its considered to be at a separate difficulty level compared to others (such as Chinese and Arabic).

Now multiply the time you took to learn English by 4 and that's how long it'll take you to get ok in Japanese at your leisure pace.

Don't be so sure anon. Japan has NO discrimination laws against homosexuals. You can legally be fired for being homosexual with no legal consequence, although in practice it probably wouldn't be listed as the reason.

I don't know if Japan is more open than Korea but here LGBT is genrally despised by people. Most of Korean think homosexuality is disgusting and unclean. Especially christian have extreme hate on homos as much as muslim does. People wouldn't publicly hate you but they would call you names behind you. This is at least recognition of Korean about homosexuality.
>>
>>77816051
Homos are despised everywhere, even in the West. The prevalence of left-wing ideology gives the illusion of acceptance but behind closed doors, people still say the truth pretty much everywhere I've visited around the world. It's just sad that lgbts have this delusion that they are now accepted more in this great age of progress. Human nature and human instincts never change, and the majority of people recoil at such degeneracy. Incredible how our ancestors rightly banned it as it was a vector for disease, and all that is simply disregarded now.

Is かける a common modifier? Are there other verbs that can be changed to "to start..." with かける?
Is it meant to be 駆ける I can't find other verbs that would fit?

Yes, かける attached to a -masu stem basically means that something as started, but not finished. やりかける, 話しかける, 食べかける, etc. It can also be in a noun form = -かけの.

you should probably stop trying to mash the languages together like this in a shortcut-ish way

in general english takes in tons of other languages and sort of makes it work following the original rules, but laziness wins over time

japanese when it does the same thing tends to break every rule of the original language to suit it's own needs

just learn shit and then observe patterns for yourself instead of trying to fit square peg into round hole

I know japanese and english are different but there are still quite a lot of verbs which become affixes that I haven't seen gathered together. e.g. 化ける (becoming)->-化 (-ification). I just realised my best bet is searching (suf) and (pref) on JMDict

行ったところ would mean the point right after the action/movement of 行く・行う was completed. Now if いっているところ could express something like "the point of going (to)", I don't know honestly. It might even mean more along the lines of "the point of having gone (to) (and remaining in that state)". 行きかける isn't extremely prevalent, judging from a quick search on google. It seems like it's used most in the forms of うまくいきかける or the auxiliary ていきかける. However in noun form 行き掛け is used to mean as you would expect, "on the way.."

Yes but that's not paying out the ass, $8 isn't that bad for shipping. Shipping to Canada from Kinokuniya is more expensive. It's marginally less expensive than Amazon Japan's shipping, at least if your order has more than 1 or 2 items, but their cost per unit is generally high enough compared to Amazon that it more than offsets the cost difference.

Going off memory, Kinokuniya is USD$12 per order + USD$1.50 per item and Amazon Japan is JPY600 per order + JPY350 per item.

Amazon seems more expensive based on shipping, but you're often saving more than JPY350 on the list price of each item anyway, so it ends up being marginally cheaper, plus their shipping gets to my house in like 2 business days.

The per item cost from Amazon/Kinokuniya is their own shipping system and has nothing to do with Canadian laws. YesAsia's free shipping is free, but the couple times I've ordered from them my order has come damaged.

Also for the record, YesAsia's non-free shipping options also charge a per-item fee on top of a base fee. Most shipping does, even domestically, in most places in the world. This is because shipping tends to be based on package weight and size.

First, try to see if you can't guess the pronunciation. That's especially easy with 2 kanji words that tend to be 音読み. Sometimes, you can also guess the 音読み of similar looking kanji (a kanji with 非 as a compound is likely pronounced 匕 or ハイ for example). If you don't know the 音読み, or if nothing shows up, then input the kanji one by one, using vocab you know. For 先程, you could type さき and ほど independently (and then realize that it's actually pronounced さきほど, whatever shit example).

If you don't know one of the kanji, it's sometimes possible to find the word by typing ? in jisho. For instance for 細菌, typing 細? is going to get you the answer pretty fast.

If the kanji you know is too common to get you a fast answer (say for example 日 in 翌日), you have no choice but to use either radical search, or to draw the kanji. Whichever is faster. If you don't know the word at all, same.
