Why do Hong Kong (and also Vietnamese) posters speak English so much better than Japanese and Korean posters? What conditions in which they learn English make them so much visibly better at English here on /int/ or in most places in the internet in general. Surely, the fact that Chinese, Korean and Japanese are so distant from English cannot be useful in understanding why. Most Singaporeans speak Chinese as their native tongue, but they speak English just as well because it is the medium of instruction in school. However in HK, English is not used as the medium of instruction anymore, and I'm guessing all the posters, if they're aged between 18 and 21 should have had been educated via Cantonese. Like the Japanese and Koreans, they too must have learnt English only as a second language and it is as different and distant from Cantonese as for Japanese. Same should apply for Vietnam, where the English language has even lower significance in education and commerce than in Hong Kong and should be equally difficult to learn. Yet Vietnamese and HK posters speak English as flawlessly as Singaporeans do here, while Japanese and Koreans invariably speak imperfect English. What could be the reasons for this?
Singapore and HK were Brit colonies. IDK about Vietnam, maybe it was taught in the South before it got defeated, and they continued teaching it later on too. Also, as far as I know, Jap way of teaching English is horribly inefficient.
