Australia has six states. But did YOU know that in terms of political and physical geography, Australia can also be thought of as being EIGHTEEN things, or three times as many things?

"The mainland" can be thought of as nine things, or half of these: the six states of NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, Queensl., South Au. and Western Au., and the three territories Northern Terr., ACT (the capital), and the JERVIS BAY territory. Even though Australians who are aware of Jervis Bay basically think of it as being part of the ACT (which in practical terms it is), it is nevertheless a legally and physically distinct territory, carved out in order to provide Canberra with a port.

The other nine to follow!

The other nine things go like this. By far the largest landmass is the so-called Australian Antarctic Territory (1), divided into two wedges/being cucked by France's relatively tiny Adelie Land claim.

In general, the rest are tiny islands.

Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) (2,3) Islands each have populations of a few hundred. The deserted Ashmore and Cartier Islands (4) are barely islands at all, and the area is used for fishing by Indonesians sometimes. The Coral Sea Islands (5) are a sort of northeastern shield, and four Bruces at a time man a weather station there-it's otherwise deserted. Norfolk Island (6) has a few thousand residents, and is relatively comfy. Most interestingly, the Heard and McDonald Islands (7) are a desolate wasteland where some seal-hunters lived briefly in squalid conditions during the 19th c. This island group is among Earth's most desolate, inaccessible wastelands. The seven things just named are also all territories, being the EXTERNAL territories of Australia.

But that's only SIXTEEN things, not EIGHTEEN just yet! The other two are also distant islands, but legally they are regarded as being parts of states, and so are not considered territories. One of these, Macquarie Island, is far southeast and is a nature preserve. Politically it's part of Tasmania, but physically the island almost looks as if it could be part of NZ.

The last place is one of the most beautiful that God ever created. Lord Howe Island (pictured) has a small resident population, is politically part of NSW, functions mostly as a nature preserve, and has strict controls on tourism (you can't come, fuck off, they're full).

I have an autistic fascination with remote/deserted islands, Pajeet. Your Sentinel (Cannibal) Islands for example.

Apart from the Britain-Argentina-Chile clusterfuck, states with Antarctic claims generally recognize each other's non-conflicting claims at some nominal level. The point of this is to lend legitimacy to the notion that states control Antarctica, and that it is not some stateless "no-man's-land". Basically recognizing other's claims is a political move which signals the legitimacy of claiming Antarctican land in general, which "helps" your own claim in some way.
