Outside Joanine/Manueline styles we only have a couple of scattered buildings to compare against Spain's palaces and cathedrals.

Obviously it helps to have a lot more large cities than we do, but they are genuinely better at architecture than we were for most of both our existances.

It has more to do with when they left: If they left in the 70's/80's, they are usually returnees from the colonies and they and their kids suck. Even the ones from the 90's. Really cocky and pretend-rich.
