it's like when I go overseas, I don't tell people I come from x town I just say 'Sydney' so people know generally where I come from
people wouldn't know where some small town is just like people won't know where canada or new zealand are

a lot of NZers didnt get famous until they went to australia

All I can think of that did that is Russell Crowe and he grew up here which makes him Australian in my eyes. The only reason he isn't a citizen is because the free movement meme we have between New Zealand and Australia makes it hard for kiwis to qualify for a citizenship here and vice versa.

I'd imagine most kiwis would be too proud to pretend to be Australian, they've got a massive inferiority complex towards Australia for the most part.
