The old left was more classic liberal, freedom and individualism, they were gradually overrun with Marxists who want to divide everyone into groups then control and wreck everything until there is a revolution.
It's become more and more of a religion in the vacuum left as religion is undermined, which is exactly what their leaders want and have always worked towards.
In that same vein, it's a "crutch for the weak minded" sold under the illusion of free thought by slightly more intelligent people are actual full blown global communists.
The ones we see are the useful idiots who ironically if they get their way wind up being the first "marched off to the gulag" because they are useless trouble makers who would have been quietly culled off or forced to become productive at any other point in human history.

You're actually describing the "New Left".

Basically, the "Old Left" (labor/socialists) in America died out in the 1960s, replaced by the "New Left" who cared mostly about social liberalism and ending the Vietnam War. The contemporary left seems to be the direct descendant of the "New Left" but taking the social liberalism to strange, authoritarian conclusions, almost like a "social communism". They don't seem to be particularly focused on economics, they're just vaguely critical of capitalism.
