You have to learn English to get by in the modern world. Once you've learned English, there isn't really a need to learn any additional languages. That's why nobody learns a third language here in Norway, despite having classes for at least five years in school.

>>77368698
>qui ne voyagent pas en territoire anglo-américain

Wrong.

Japanese has 130 million speakers and the japanese population is in steady decline while
French has 220 million speakers and is rapidly increasing, particularly in west / central Africa

>And I would never want to travel to any of the shitholes where people speak Arabic.

Speak for yourself but bear in mind you are only limiting your options. Lebanon and Tunisia are far from being examples of "shitholes"

>>77370061

French is useful and is still widely used even in countries that speak Arabic (morocco, maghreb, syria) as a prestige language. It is also a literary and poetic language - a language of culture

>>77370073

I would feel the same way. I almost tried to start learning the language but the three alphabets really turned me off desu. I dont like anime or manga either so thats probably the main draw for most people here

This is bullshit. Even in the heartland of the former French colonial Africa, people are starting to learn English in favor of French. English is even starting to replace French as an official language in some former French colonies.
And all the countries in the Maghreb (and this includes Morocco, kek) have already abolished French as an official language. You'd be better off with English. And particularly in Morocco, you'd even be better off speaking Spanish than French.
>>

Cant wait until you actually travel there and realise its an absolute shithole. I spend my spare time watching YouTube videos of weeabos who break down in japan on their vblog channels. >>

Please stop spewing bullshit and talking out of your ass. I don't hate Japan ! If you are asking me why I dislike your country it's mainly because your country produces conformists who are unable to express themselves. Do you not have a saying that translates to "the nail that sticks out is hammered down"? I have no problem with Japanese people but I take issue with your work mentality which is assbackwards and your position on women which is incredibly regressive. We colonized you after nuking you but evidently we mistakenly passed along all of the negative traits of capitalism without passing on the positive traits of individuality. The saying I was searching for is apparently "出る釘は打たれる" but I do not speak Japanese. Hopefully this clarifies why some Americans view your country in a negative light. Your mentality is so different than the western mentality that it isnt easy for us to relate to your collectivist ideology - in our countries individuality is something that is cherished and even celebrated. I am but one American and can only speak for myself. Many Americans love Japan and read and watch a fuckton of manga!
>>
>>77370926
>And that eighty percent contributes nothing to the betterment of man

Not true. Good artisans in France, Japan, Italy... often speak zero English. A lot of top level politicians, and even some billionaire businessmen, only speak their mother tongue. Good writers, important thinkers do master their language but can ignore English. Etc.
>>
>>77370904

BioWare, Tim Hortons, everything Americans touch turns to shit.
>>

Oh yeah, entirely in agreement. You can argue that our hands off unregulated economic model has lead to our technological innovation, though. Obviously the fact that americans are not provided federally mandated vacations is just futher example as to how backwards corporate law is in America. Work life balance is basically nonexistant since our average salaried worker will only get about 1.5 weeks vacation per year with no paternal leave / pto / sickdays. I'm currently trying to juggle French, Italian, and Portuguese, I like learning new languages (it's why I'm here). You shouldn't make baseless generalisations. I'm sure a lot of people aren't interested in taking one up but to each their own. Also, English is piss easy for everyone to learn because of the Anglosphere of influence and the fact that it's the current lingua franca.
>>
>>77371880

>>77364574
I don't understand why it's such a bad thing knowing ownly English. They will never need another language, so why bother. Learning another language is a boring process, and the prize you end up with at the end is not worth shit because you already did have the knowhow to communicate with other people in English. Unless you are moving to another country there is no way that it's worth it.

I speak German including English and the other scandis, but I wish I could just delete German from my mind. I never use it nor do I want to use it, English is superior and more useful. Americans and Anglos have a nice deal going, they only need to know their mother tongue. Good for them.
>>

Bro, you talk like a fag.
French isn't even Portuguese-tier. It's completely useless outside of a shitty and shrinking part of Africa. And nobody says: "You know where I'd like to travel? The Central African Republic!"
How proficient do you think African L2-speakers are, anyway? I'm guessing n"ot very".
>>
>>77372575
Yes, I guess that's true. And useful for those who think it's worth it. I sure don't. But I also think that most people are capable to learn a new language anyway, it's an innate ability we have as humans. We are expert communicators.

I think it's good to teach children a second language young so they at least learn the skill set if they want to learn more languages down the line. It only benefits them down the line. I'm American and didn't start learning a second language till I was 15, and even then it was a poor excuse for "learning" one in the American education system.
>>
>>77372469
That's not me, but I think it's pretty rude to use a simple typo like that as proof of idiocy. I didn't give you shit for not knowing that Morocco is a part of the Maghreb.
And to be honest, you've been needlessly vitriolic this whole thread.
I don't feel like I've done anything to deserve it. I haven't even criticized you for leaning French. I think it's nice to have something you're passionate about. And if learning French fills that role for you, that's a good thing. But it is still a completely useless language. Why can't you just accept that?
>>
>>77372687
It could be useful in case the child grows up and want to learn yet another language. That way he have the experience and his mind had a similar exercise before. In Norway we do it obligatory anyway with English, and we also have an obligatory third language. The third language always annoyed me a bit because I was never interested. It would help a lot if we were able to choose Icelandic as a third language instead. Or if we could choose any language we wanted, how great would that be? But learning spanish, german, or french? I was never interested. I took german, but I wish I had the option of choosing Icelandic instead.

Why don't they teach us Icelandic in School? It makes so much more sense for us. A third language is supposed to be about interest, since we already have the useful lingua franca in our mind. We don't need yet another "lingua franca" which really isn't a lingua franca anyway.
>>
>>77372793
>Or if we could choose any language we wanted
You can in videregående. I have friends who learned Russian, Latin, Japanese, Polish. It can replace the normal third language, but the lessons are usually in the evening, and at a different school if yours doesn't offer it.

>I didn't give you shit for not knowing that Morocco is a part of the Maghreb.

Except I know that Morocco is a part of Maghreb

>you've been needlessly vitriolic this whole thread.

Aw did I hurt your feelings sweetie? Welcome to 4chan. I have insulted and will continue to insult you for your baseless claims that undermine the importance of French in africa. Spreading misinformation is as much shitposting as any other form of trolling.

For the other norwegian sorry I confused you with this assclown but you can scroll up to see that your other representative of norsk is an ignorant douchebag

Maybe now. But we didn't get that choice back when I went in videregående/high school. Or maybe we did have it hidden within some rules, saying that we have the right to do so. But our school did not offer anything else at least. And they never gave us the option. It sucks. But in any case, Icelandic should be a natural language for a Norwegian to learn, I think. After all it's our own lost language. Makes a lot more sense than German, French, or Spanish in my opinion.
>>
>>77372985
Whatever you guys were arguing about is your own business. Are you going to Africa to speak French there?
I'd say that learning another language for you as an American, is just a matter of your own interests. Nobody should tell you that it's a waste of time if you're really interested in doing so, but as a default I think it's not necessary nor particularly useful.
>>
>>77364574
i live on an island in the pacific where everyone speaks English

I have no reason to learn a second language.
>>
Learning pidgin English by osmosis isn't some mind-blowing accomplishment
>>

> Nobody should tell you that it's a waste of time if you're really interested in doing so

Exactly. The other norganon proclaims every language other than "english" and a select few languages (including Japanese) to be useless and a waste of time to learn. Atleast we can see eye to eye have a <you>

The world is already small enough without arbitrarily limiting your worldview by only speaking 1-2 languages.

t. Ramiro Alfonso Martínez Jr.

I met a retired Briton last year on the coast. He's been living here for 14 years in a secluded Britbong colony, but he's trying to learn Spanish and finally integrate. I appreciate that, too many British immigrants stay in their ghettos and don't want anything to do with natives.

Rwanda replaced French with English as their official language.
All the countries in the Maghreb, as well as the Levant, have abolished French as their official language. And there has been a strong movement to remove French from all aspects of public life. At this point you won't get any further with French there than you would with English.
And all the large, important African countries like Nigeria and South Africa speak English. There is no way that French will experience more growth than English in Africa.

>>77373214
This whole thread I've been arguing that the only language truly worth knowing is English. I only said that Japanese is more useful than French. But neither of them are useful. And as I said before, I don't think learning a language out of interest is a bad thing. But you shouldn't pretend like it's useful.

Monolinguals often don't understand at all what it takes to become fluent in another language.
I have lived in South Korea for a few years and the amount of Americans I met who told me they knew Korean really well and then were actually utter shit at it once I heard them speak was disgusting.

Learning how to speak another language will also broaden your horizon in other ways than just being able to talk to X people.

Although not all Moroccans are fluent, French is widely spoken in Morocco, and you can get by easily if you just use French (like in all the former French colonies). English generally won't be understood there, even if it's progressing among the most educated who still prefer French, by the way. Stop being an absolute retard.

Except the 80% of people who don't speak English. You know, French shopkeepers, Italian tailors, Russian girlfriends, Chinese politicians, Argentinian dancers and Japanese craftsmen. You won't reach them with English.
>>
>>77373850
草泥马 is "grass mud horse" but it's used to get around the censors in China because it sounds like 操你妈 which is "fuck your mum".

>How proficient do you think African L2-speakers are, anyway? I'm guessing n"ot very".
It goes from okay to frankly excellent. Many Africans speak at least decent French (often with surprisingly advanced words like "hegemonic" or "bewitchment"), even if they have a heavy accent. The most educated Africans literally speak a better French than native speakers.

Around 16% of the world population speaks English, and that's around the same proportion as Mandarin Chinese, I don't think 16% is considered "almost everybody else"

No, it added English but didn't remove French.

>All the countries in the Maghreb, as well as the Levant, have abolished French as their official language.
Yes, for political reasons, but it didn't change anything in real life.

>And there has been a strong movement to remove French from all aspects of public life.
Dubious.

>At this point you won't get any further with French there than you would with English.

And please visit Algeria once and tell me how far you got with French.

I know all I need to know about OIF. Basically any country can become a member. It has little to do with the French language, but more with the hopeless desire of the French to remain relevant in the world.

Given English's presence as a global language, many don't see the point of learning another language. I don't agree though. Being able to communicate with more people is great.
