Is Eastern/Central Europe stagnating?

I was looking at economies of countries and noticed how former communist europe still is alot poorer than the west, even accounting for the more westernized regions in czech/poland.

Spain and Korea are two pretty good comparison, they opened up and became "democratic" in the 80s, and started growing rapidly about a few years before ex-commie europe did. they are still however much richer, and have grown even richer in the 90s and 2000s compared to poorer eastern bloc places. they are richer a 10 years ago than these places are now as an additional point.

can anyone from these countries explain why their region is now stagnating? is it because of german dominance/eu? internal corruption/shitty education/less motivated population?

Because everyone's a subcontractor for Western European companies that take the profit out. Korea has Samsung n shit.
>>
>>77203782

After 2008, not a single economy had significant real income growth.

There you have your explanation.
2000s Poland is roughly equal to 1990s Korea, otherwise
>>
>>77203952
China is growing a lot since 2008
>>
>>77203996
You're right

I should've written 'advanced Western economies'. Wages have barely increased since 2008.

true i kinda think the dominance of western corporations are a strong reason.

then again at one point all koreans were basically sweatshop labourers for big jap companies and built itself up internally.

samsung for example started out as a fucking sugar refinery, LG started out as a plastic maker, hyundai was a textile company etc.

We're affected as well

So are the US and Australia, they've nothing to do with us

yeah but south korea was still in its poor phase in the 1990s and had 10%+ growth in the late 90s/2000s.

they didn't really explode until japan's collapse. they directly competed with japanese electronics and now sony, panasonic and so-on are kinda irrelevant.

eastern europe is almost completely stagnant in comparison imo.
>>
>>77204161
yup estonia is an exception but they are smaller population and much better managed, not to forget they are more urbanized and don't have the poor mentality (eg. life is to live work and die) common across eastern europe/third world.
>>
>>77204197
Yes, the Eurozone is neo-mercantilism

Doesn't change the fact *everyone* in the developed World suffers wage stagnation

>>77204209
Koreans invest like 5% of their GDP in R&D and work 60h weeks, they deserve their moderate success
>>
>>77204249
Yeah, Estonia is essentially one large city
But they're still doing better than Albania, Macedonia or Georgia as well
>>
its impossible to penetrate the western jews market, if you do, they start a smear campaign against you, not like we have many products we make ourselfs, but its impossible to actually develop your economy further then, lel lets assemble mercedes cars
>>
>>77204372
honestly its not that much higher than poland for example. they do send fucktons of their kids here to study at university, probably the only first world country that does this. i don't really get why since they have world-known universities.

R&D is great however, this is true for germany too since you guys pour tonnes of dollars into science and technology and have foreign scientists/engineers come in like america does.

>>77204445
estonia really is an outlier, historically and culturally too compared to the eastern bloc imo. can't really compare them.
>>
>>77204613
South Korea has a whole "culture" of worshipping your boss, long unpaid hours and competition. Poland lacks that.

That may also be the reason why Koreans send their children abroad: in Korea, you need connections and private teachers to get into a worthwhile uni.
>>
>>77204497
this 2bh. How can you compete against germany when they have been working under the same regulation since the beginning and you should modify your business to meet them when you become a part of eu. You start later, you need more money to make your business to meet regulation and you should compete against big corporations. You are fucked right after you become part of the eu
>>
>>77204923
European post-Soviet countries that never became part of the EU have it even worse

Don't put the blame on external causes, this mentality drags you down
>>
>>77203782
This is more like how strong is your currency to USD graph
>>
>>77205032
What about countries that understand what a fucking cuckfest your union is and don't want to be part of it?
Everyone knows that countries want to be part of it only because visa free travel and immigration to a better place. Name one country that greatly benefit economically from euro currency or your over regulation
>>
>>77205178
Slovakia
>>
>>77205178
No, thanks
My argument was: the ex-Soviet countries that didn't become part are doing even worse than those that did

Ukraine worse than Romania
Serbia worse than Croatia
Even Poland has higher wages than Russia now

Ergo, we're not to blame.

Germany

do you actually come into contact with real life bureaucracy?

One of benefits of EU is that you can sell across entire thing without having to conform to regulations of 28 countries but just one. Obviously that is double edged because it opens you up to competition.
>>
>>77203850
Use PPP when it makes your cunt look good, and nominal when it makes their cunt look bad.

Both spain and korea has access to world trade system through oceans.
Most of eastern europe is landlocked or has access to land locked seas. Poland is on the peripheries of the world wide trade system, if we want to get rich, we need to make our own trade system within central/eastern europe that would be alternative to EU, that's what intermarium is all about.

Trading with china through land would also be hugely profitable.

Right now we are shitty subcontractor economy for germany.
>>
>>77208269

If ocean trade access were everything, Switzerland would be a poor European country and Portugal the richest.
>>

Don’t compare South Korea to former-communist countries.

Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia were the countries that were made out to be on the opposing ends of a worldwide ostentation; prime examples of how capitalism is better than the old communist or, in some places, socialist economic system, because where better to show said dissimilarity than in Koreas and along the Iron Curtain, all that by pouring money into the West's frontiers and creating an economically isolated area on the other side.
I wouldn’t say Eastern Europe is stagnating. It’s just a different kind of rich. Eastern Europeans generally own a lot of land and properties, which is not shown in GDP/capita (PPP).
>>
>>77209181
it’s not everything, but the Polish anon has a valid point. Historically, access to the sea meant a lot in terms of development.
Switzerland found a marketing niche with banks, watches, chocolate. For that to happen they needed to stay neutral during WW2. And for that to happen their territory had to be very difficult to invade. Alps saved them.
>>
>>77204445
>Yeah, Estonia is essentially one large city
yes and no. the money is in a couple of big cities [namely the Capital (sic!) effect], but in other terms it's really uniform. take a look at pisa results, they pretty much by definition show uniformity throughout the country. infrastructure is uniform if you discount the "last mile" of everything (mostly people just bitching about not having fibre tier internet speeds)
>>
>>77208269
part of it is true certainly, but alot of it is whether who owns the actual corporations. poles don't own the companies they work for and cannot set laws to develop its own industries.

korea on the other hand was fully capable of building up its own through restrictions on imports while at the same time getting money and expertise from working for jap corporations.

>>77209181>>77205032

honestly the people who profit the most from german domination are germans themselves. most of the capital and shares are owned by ethnic germans, and dividends and so-on would be paid to a german/german institution (IE pension funds for germans).

this basically keeps germany in the position of a new york or toronto and poland as a manufacturing hub.
>>
>>77204613
>can't really compare them.
yes you can. just because we come out head over doesn't mean you can't compare. stop being so emotional about data.
>>
>>77210211
What are you on about? Pisa has nothing to do with economy. We're better than Scandinavia on Pisa. The economy is centered on major cities, sure.
>>
>>77209653>>77209890

poland does have seas though, i don't get this argument because danish straits are international waters.

but the polish north coast is undeveloped because they have nothing really to export.
>>
>>77210296
i intended to show that our country is not like some city-state making the score.

and yes anon, pisa does have something, which is a modest way of saying everything to do with the economishon
>>
>>77210296
PISA has a lot to do with it, it shows human capital and how well and capable your workers will be.

low scoring countries in latin america/balkans won't catch up for the foreseeable future for this reason of how shitty their human capital is imo while estonia is at breakneck development.
>>
>>77210419
>human capital
huh. that would've been the polite way of stating my point.

damn you canadians for being so polite
>>
>>77210419
Education *does* correlate with GDP, but only so much

Mexico and Russia have lots of good engineers, but no application for them, for example
>>
>>77210684
the thing is that its average human capital =! specific people. lots of very smart russians and mexicans and brazilians but on average they produce a less skilled workforce.

>>77210450
human capital is a correct term though, for how capable a population is.

our population is something like 50-60% have a post-high school degree/diploma (specialized training) but also the quality of our workers aren't shit.
>>
>>77210419
I mean no disrespect for the pisa test since I have taken it as a random subject (while they could have chosen an X amount of better students).
>>
>>77210684
entrepreneurship, another part of essential modern education covers your 'only so much' bit
as does just general financial literacy with which i'll admit our youth have problems with (i don't have any stats to back up my claim, just personal exp with seeing how the early 20s spend their money these days).

>>77210929
i don't think the quality of our workers is shit either. otherwise they couldn't land a 'lower than potential wealth acquired by labor' paying job in a more well payed country instead of working here. so i again stress the need for business know how, a problematic thing here
>>
>>77210929
In Russia, 80% or so have high school diploma. And they're not dumber than we are.

Doesn't help them much, though.
>>
>>77210211
I don't think you are using (sic) correctly
>>
>>77211428
capitol vs. capital. the thing being capital flowing into capitoal.

?
>>
>>77203782
>denominated in US dollars.
US dollar has been growing stronger.
>>
>>77211452
Sic is used after a quote. So i don't know who your quoting here so it's out of place
>>
>>77211544
nvm, i feel canadian on this one that flew over your head
>>
>>77211587
So sic is short for sic erat scriptum. It means thus was it written. People use it when they quote misspelled or arachic spellings
>>
>>77211737
>thus was it written
and there you have it
>>
>>77211792
So who the hell are you quoting then?
>>
>>77211858
the
>thus was it written
>or sic!
was to emphasize that i wrote something in an incorrect way

are you the one the parents didn't come for after the kindergarten closed?
