You can't argue against the lowest recidivism rate in the world. If you apply a barbaric, savage eye for an eye mentality like most of the world (US being a good example of this) crime only increases but people get out of prison worse than before.

An example my dad spent 2 years in prison for a non-violent crime. He lost his house during that time, has a ton of fines to pay and can't get a job now. Not to mention the things he experienced and learned while in prison. Just imagine what an actual violent criminal would do after getting out of prison like that.

There's a reason the US has a recidivism rate of 70%+. Eye for an eye mentality may feel great, but justice is simply not important when it comes to reducing crime in a society.
