Because when we say Asians, we mean yellow people. For South Asians, we say Indians, for the Middle-East, we say Middle-Easterners. When Brits say Asians, they refer to yellow people with a flat face and weird eyes too.

Because in different societies the same words have different meanings.

Usually when Americans say Asian they mean Mongoloid and it would include everyone in East and Southeast Asia. Someone from Indonesia, Philipines, Laos, Burma, Thailand, China, Korea, Japan ect would be Asian. When Americans refer to South Asia they call them Indians.
