in latin countries coffee is like pic related, it's very concentrated compared to mug coffee you see elsewhere. French have their unique press (which is inferior, but they like it better).
As you can imagine, this coffee has a very strong flavour which means you either like it or you add sugar so you can drink socialy (drinking coffee is can be part of any social encounter). The amount of cafeíne in these little cups is easely more you can find in a whole mug of what you drink not that it makes a diference, but to underline the point of using italian machinery to squeze the toasted coffee powder (also the amount of toasting varies even within this countries)
With that in mind, putting sugar in a coffee is spoiling it, not because of elitism, but because it no longer tastes like coffee - it would be like adding suggar to bourbon to make it more atractive to certain demographics.

I drink black expresso, but when I go to the netherlands I add sugar to the coffee beverages they serve there, it tastes too watery for me and I need something to complement it. I drink it mostly because social situations lead to it and my slight addiction also makes me happier everytime I think about drinking coffee at the set hour (even if I don't particularly like it).

agree. and it is not really that expensive to start with. aeropress or frenchpress 30€+grinder 50€. "good" coffee beans start at twice the price of normal supermarket beans.
but this basic setup is enough to really get a different taste.

Actually the most consumed form of coffe in Italy is the espresso, which is served black, sugar optional.

Any electric burr blade grinder will work for french press because you need a coarse grind. If you wanted to make espresso you need a flat burr grinder which are generally very expensive. They're more consistent and generate less heat for smaller grinds. Warming the ground coffee burns off some of the oils that would have been extracted into the water.

it just so happens that cocoa is borderline inedible, and coffee is just the seed/core of the coffee fruit (dunno if you can eat the it, probably you can)

also coffee roasting is somewhat recent, as it was fastar than merely drying up the beans like arabs did

Chocolate was originaly made with (american continent) spices, and not sugar though. Sugar took over because the spaniards produced a lot and it was better at taking away the inate sourness of cocoa, later on it became cheaper as well
