A good relationship will never exist between Russia and the US because Russia lacks key demographics and resources that make it attractive to US investment, both financial and strategic. The 20-40 demographic in Russia is basically aging out of consumption without any real way of replacing itself, which means there's no market for US consumer goods. Russia also doesn't have any resources that the US can't acquire more cheaply and safely at home or close to it (from Canada and/or Mexico).

Trump's strange obsession with Putin is the only reason that such a relationship can even be discussed - it's not firmly rooted in reality.

>>
>>77033592
Abandoning the Baltics isn't really as far-fetched as it sounds. In fact, abandoning much of central Europe up to and including Germany isn't that far-fetched. The entire region is hopelessly dependent on Russian energy and has no chance of getting off of it anytime soon.

What is the US to do when Russia decides to turn off the lights? These states have no alternative energy policy in place already so even if the American military can deflect the Eternal Ivan, what then?

Europe, in general, has to face some harsh geopolitical realities very soon or doom themselves to a return to the pre-1945 status quo (read: eternal war on the continent)

Yeh but even right after the USSR collapsed and Russia was in ruins and completely at our mercy, Western companies didn't make any attempt to invest there. They bought up everything that wasn't nailed down, but not investment, in fact we merely extended NATO eastward.
>>
A strategic alliance only works if you have some common interest, for example we had an alliance with China in the 70s-80s due to a common anti-Soviet view. That all ended with the Cold War.
>>
>>77040371
Strategic investment was never an option - the remaining bigwigs from the Soviet era liquidated their holdings to Western businesses, took the capital, and stashed it in foreign banks, especially ones in the United States.

That's why the 90s were such a baller era to be alive in the west - on top of the capital the baby boomers provided by saving for their retirement, you also had capital flowing in from Russia. Credit was easy to obtain so the standard of living rose significantly.
>>
>>77040429
>baby boomers

>>77040453
I think what he actually means is that in the 90s, the US and Western Europe made bank selling things to the starving Butthurt Belt who were desperate for a McDonalds cheeseburger and a pair of Adidas.
>>
>>77040453
They did actually, especially in real estate. Hence the subprime crisis. They also pay into social security, which uses its annual surpluses to provide extra capital to other government agencies.

that american lady who represents america at the UN was right "america can't and won't ever trust the russians".
russians are pathological liers, we can't have normal relationship based on equality with other people. we would always try to use you for our own goals and benefits. russians' mindset is too corrupt, we are unable to have normal, healthy relations
>>
>>77041108
>we would always try to use you for our own goals and benefits

All countries are self-serving desu.
>>
It's like I said. In the 90s, even though Russia was completely at our mercy, we didn't invest money there or extend any Marshall Plan kind of thing because we clearly didn't trust them enough. Rebuild their infrastructure so they could invade Eastern Europe again? Hell no. So we did the next best thing which was simply steal whatever we could from the place.
>>
>>77041108
>>77041269
That was why Obama trying to reopen ties with Cuba was a mistake--invest money there so it would go into Raul Castro's pockets while the people have two hours of electricity a day.
>>
Or, I mean China. The North Korea problem will never be satisfactorily solved because Beijing will always put their own cynical strategic interests ahead of the awful life that people in North Korea have to live. They simply don't see why it's a big deal that Pyongyang has torture camps and you can get arrested for accidentally sitting on a newspaper with Kim Jong Un's face on it.

>>
>>77041452
The problem with both Russia and China is that they view geopolitics as a zero-sum game and they're not capable of cooperating with other countries, they have this paranoic nationalism and believe the rest of the planet is out to get them. Hence the compulsion to impose despotic governments on their neighbors (like North Korea) to put some distance between themselves and the free world.

It's not like Europe where national rivalries have been put aside for the common good.
>>
>>77020834
It's like Mexico or Cuba being butthurt toward USA and expecting Russia to kick American ass. Bordering countries are always butthurt toward bigger and more powerful neighbors.
>>
>>77041716
Your post had nothing in it worth seriously discussing.
>>
>>77041968
The argument is more that North Korea isn't merely a "buffer zone", it's a loose cannon that could cause World War III. I mean, Belarus is more-or-less a buffer zone between Russia and the Butthurt Belt, but nobody cares because that country is completely harmless. North Korea is not. They have the potential to cause a catastrophic war.
>>

>>77042016
Is it even a buffer zone these days? I mean, it's not as if we're going to invade China. This isn't the 50s.
>>
>>77042115
The conventional wisdom left over from the Cold War goes something like this:

"The continued existence of the DPRK prevents a unified, US-backed Korea on China's strategically sensitive Manchurian border."

However, as you said, we obviously aren't going to invade China in this day and age, moreover China is plenty capable of securing their borders now which they were not in the 1950s. If North Korea collapsed, we would also likely withdraw our troops from the peninsula, as the reason for their being there would no longer exist.

Beijing has always been stubbornly insistent that if war breaks out in Korea, that American troops are not allowed to go north of the DMZ. What China would do in that situation is unclear, but I doubt anyone in Washington would want to provoke them and find out. Hence the old Chinese proverb "You have to yank on the tiger's tail to see how he reacts." Should North Korea collapse, it is far more likely that China would simply occupy the place themselves and install a completely pliant puppet government.

So the buffer zone thing...it's not really true today, although Cold War-era mentalities are a bit hard to shake off especially since the people running governments aren't Millenials (and won't be for another 30 or so years), they're Cold War babbies.
>>
>>77042236
Washington wouldn't sit back and just let the Norks become a chink satellite.
>>
>>77042275
There might not be a choice.
>>
Everyone is in universal agreement that North Korea is a serious danger to peace in East Asia and the regime needs to go BUT nobody can agree on what to replace it with, that's the problem. The US would ideally want a unified, democratic Korea. However, China wants instead to have a protectorate in the north that is completely under their control, out of their own economic and strategic interests.

South Korea doesn't really want to absorb the North either, because the cost of rebuilding and integrating its population would be ruinous. Also it could be argued that the ROK really doesn't want to share a border with China.

And then, the other thing is that the existing North Korean regime cannot be removed at all without causing a catastrophic war.

>>
>>77042236
North Korea really doesn't have nearly as friendly and brotherly relations with China as is often believed. The Norks have resisted Chinese attempts to turn them into a protectorate for decades, they've also banned the use of hanja characters. Kim Jong Il had little use for Beijing except as a source of money and oil/gas/electricity, and he reportedly said on his deathbed that China cannot be trusted.

Believe me, there is nothing more China would like to do than have a protectorate in North Korea that is completely under their control. They've been trying to do it since the 50s--they tried to export the Cultural Revolution and Maoism to the DPRK in the late 60s and unsuccessfully tried to get them to adopt China's "reform" communism. They tried to coup Kim Jong Un and replace him with his uncle (a Chinese operative), who got fed to dogs.

Generally no, but in many cases it was worthless anywhere beside USSR.

Why would you need an expert in marxist-leninist theory of class relations, for example?

Plus, beside such invented degrees, you would have historians interested only in searching for class-struggle through history, economists trying to prove the superiority of socialist-economy over capitalist (imperialist) one, or agronomists trying to implement marxist-leninist theory into the potato cultivation.

Time to repost "Life under communism":

*You have no freedom or right to control your own destiny. The state tells you where you can live and what jobs you can have.
*Consumer goods are poor quality and in short supply--it can take months to purchase a bicycle, TV set, or coffee table.
*Jobs are mostly assigned based on your status as a member of the proletarian class such as "worker" or "peasant", or because you have connections to some party bigshot, and you could be denied a job if a member of your family did something politically unacceptable.
*If you complain about anything, you go to jail or a labor camp.
*Religion is either banned or strictly controlled by the state.
*You need permission to travel outside the country.
*Food is poor quality and limited in supply--markets often only have a few items on sale. People literally get sick and experience malnutrition from the shitty diet.
*There are no free elections and government officials do not have to answer to the public.
*All media, art, and entertainment must conform to the state agenda--this includes glorifying the party or the leader and schlocky propaganda art of muscled factory workers while demonizing whatever ideologies/people/countries the party wants demonized.
*The print and electronic media only report whatever news the state wants you to hear while not mentioning what they don't want you to know.
*There is no independent judiciary and you do not have a right to a fair trial or legal representation.
*Hotels and apartments are bugged, so be careful what you say.
*Some cities are "closed" meaning you cannot visit them without official permission.

Yeah, his grandfahter was a cook in one of Stalin's villa, and his father served in NKVD destruction battalions. Totally ordinary.

What is Canada such a butthurt bitch about? What possible reason do they have for only 65% of their population liking Americans and 30% outright hating us? Our countries and cultures are basically the exact same.

"One day the commissar was visiting the collective farm. The farmer told him 'Oh comrade, it's glorious. We have so many potatoes that if we piled them all up, they would touch the face of God.' To which the commissar replied 'Bah, there's no God. That's just capitalist superstition.' The farmer then said 'That's ok, there aren't any potatoes anyway.'"

Reagan himself mentioned he learned those jokes from the Russian people. His delivery is great though.

Not true. History and economics was heavily politicized but arts and music were almost completely untouched. Teachers from before revolution were not removed and arts and music were heavily subsidized. USSR's art and music were in fact so good, CIA had to fund modern "art" for west to be seen as comparable.
