How hard is it to learn Czech?

I would like to be able to have a conversation with my grandfather in Czech before he dies, which could be soon since he's already 80 years old.
>>
>>77002914
I didn't even know Czech was a language. I thought they just spoke German
>>
very easy i learned it as a small baby
>>
>>77002914
Schprechen Sie Deutsch?
>>
>>77002914
Mám tě rád, dědečku.

mahm tyeh raah-d, dyeh-detch-kooh.

I love you, grandfather (well "I like you", really, but we don't spam "love" like you do)

verbatim: I-have you gladly, grandfather (funny how this works like german gern haben, kek)
>>
It's hard but at least your grandfather isn't Hungarian or you'd really be fucked.
>>
>>77003086
hungarian is easier when learning from the scratch, really simple grammar
>>
>>77003075
http://vocaroo.com/i/s15eRF4sGTkz

This is what I'm working with so far. Understandable? I know my stresses are probably wrong but all I have is an old book.
>>
>>77003086
hungarian isn't hard m8, just lots of noun cases (which are easy if you understand linguistics)

slavic languages are a lot more difficult

Hungarian is so interesting to me. How are the verb conjugations?
>>
>>77003264
i dont know what those words mean
>>
>>77003212
>slavic languages are a lot more difficult
Nope. Finno ugric languages are hard, but some obscure languages like basque, irish or icelandic are extremely hard.
>>
>>77003264
There are only 3 tenses (past, present, future) and very few irregular verbs. The verbs that end in -ik have their own set of rules though.
>>
>>77002958
They speak a dialect of Slovakian they've re-branded as a new language for political reasons.
>>
>>77003305

he never said slavspeak was the hardest in the world, he just said it was harder to learn than hungarian
>>
>>77003309
No subjunctive or conditional? Sounds simple, but obviously not.
>>77003318
So like Lietuvos kalba and Latviesu valoda. Can you speak Lithuanian in Latvia and be understood?
>>
>>77003366
>Can you speak Lithuanian in Latvia and be understood?

Can you speak Dutch in America and be understood?
>>
>>77003328
Probably jus depends on person, Hungarian is not as alien as some people think but is still quite odd.

Like in English you say

I am Hungarian

Ja som Maďar (in Slovak)

Magyar vagyok in Hun

See the first 2 follow same pattern, dont know if its because of Indo-Euro language group though.

Both Slovak and Hungarian are relatively easy to learn i would say, but it all depends on source material, which is garbage for both, but you could learn Russian and speaking one Slavic language makes learning other very simple, matter of months really
>>
>>77003394
>he lives in Komarno and thinks learning Magyar is easy
try being native speaker of no-cases shit-tier language
>>
>>77003424
Bulgarian has no cases?

What a shame.

Bulgarian is the easiest Slavic language to learn because of the lack of cases. Russian is more popular to learn because of it's literature and importance in the world.
Except for the alien vocabulary, is the grammar simple? In what way?
>>77003463
I like the 'dual' case in Slovenian

Learning czech is difficult, it has so many unusual stresses and phonetics is a pure nightmare.
>>
>>77003487
I dont know, i dont speak it xd
>>
>>77003444
We lost our cases due to Turks and Byzantines burning our monasteries, libraries and trying to assimilate us. at one point only very few Bulgarians were educated and most of the people started mixing the case suffixes. This led to the creation of so called "common suffixes" - i.e. they used the same suffix for Accusative or Dativ case.... With time it all lost it's meaning. Later in the 18th-19th century they tried to resurrect the cases, but it was too late. It's kinda weird how even Romanians have cases, Greeks have cases, Turks have cases, but we and our off-spring(Monkeydonians) don't.

>>77003511
People always comment how Russian is difficult especially the letter ы. Never had a problem with it. But that silent letter fucks me up

VERY hard

Czech is a mixture of Slovak, Polish, German and Latin languages
>>
>>77003192
That's pretty good, keep it up m8.

"Učím SE česky" (I teach self czech) the verb is used in both teaching and learning context.
>>
>>77003424
>he wants shitty cases
>>
>>77004087
>ucim se cesky
exactly how we say it in Serbian too "I'm teaching myself czech"
>>
>>77003366
>Can you speak Lithuanian in Latvia and be understood?
Understood yes, actual conversation not really.

>>77003388
LT/LV aren't as far apart as dutch and English.
>>
In Serbian it'd be 'ja učim česki' without the reflexive pronoun but with a mandatory personal pronoun.
