Ours is small as fuck too.

We literally built our capitals from the ground to be capital cities. For us we chose, what at the time was a tiny shitty village, of Ottawa to be our capital because it was in a politically and economically strategic location between Upper and Lower Canada and was an easily defendable position in case the Americans attacked.

Washington DC is an artificial city we created out of land from two states so there could be a neutral place for our states to come together. The actual area of the District of Columbia is fairly tiny and only has about 600,000 people in it, but the surrounding metropolitan area, which includes many towns, cities, and suburban areas in Virginia and Maryland, has about 2 million people.

Nobody in the US really gives a shit about DC in regard to anything besides politics and our federal government. It doesn't really have an identity of its own and it has a really high turnover of residents (meaning most people working and living there have neither been there very long and will probably not stay very long). This has meant that it never really had an opportunity to really develop a unique culture like say New York or Boston has.

Basically, Americans don't view our capital the same way Europeans view theirs' (the cultural and historical center of the country).

there's only a few examples of that, I think. We don't generally make the most important cities in our states the capitals either. (ie the capital of New York is actually Albany, the capital of California is Sacremento and not SF or LA, the capital of Louisiana is Baton Rouge and not New Orleans)

You get a better picture of the size of the cities if you look at metro population, but keep in mind most of that isn't very urban

Here's a better ranking of the size of American cities. If you just go by size of central city places like San Francisco, DC, and Minneapolis seem way smaller than they are, and small cities that happen to annex their suburbs like Indianapolis seem much bigger.
