there main reasons why it would've been near impossible to win is

>the VC and a lot of vietnamese regarded the US similar to France (their very recent colonial overlords), which essentially turned the fight into a fight for independence of sorts from many's perspectives
>the social/racial tensions back home plus the ugly picture of the war led to a terrible public relations crisis, the conscripts had extreme morale issues that weren't seen in korea or the world wars due to the straightforwardness of the strategy and the generally conventional warfare they had previously faced

It wasn't the military side of Vietnam that the Americans lost on. It was that the only political solution was to occupy the south in perpetuity similar to South Korea. The South Vietnamese government was far too weak to stand on its own.
