don't worry, this just means that your database was opened for writing, and when it was closed, a piece of data was supposed to be deleted but it wasn't. All your data is probably safe.

First of all, try rebooting your computer; some other process might have opened your database and rebooting might make that process clean up.

If that doesn't work reply to me because for some reason I can't find a foolproof way to unlock the db. I'm still searching. If that doesn't work, you might have to restore from a backup as the error suggests; the process for doing so is detailed in the manual.

ok, so, after a bit more investigation, it looks like sqlite cannot mantain a lock after a reboot, since it's handled by the operating system. I'm reasonably confident that a reboot will fix your issue.

You don't learn or grow by reading alone*, in the same sense that you don't learn or grow by watching reality TV.**

The words just pass your face and your mind imagines the story and that's all. All you gain is entertainment. You have to care and pay attention, sometimes even considering only tangentially related topics in order to squeeze good brain juice out of most trash fiction or internet articles. Additionally, if you're only considering the author's perspective, and absorbing only that as fact, it's sort of an intellectual cuckoldry where your mind-wife gets blacked.

*Except in the context of reading material in a jew language, as we're doing, where care and attention are made and there are a lot of low-hanging fruit to extract.
**Except in the context of watching reality TV in a new language, as we're doing, where care and attention are made and there are a lot of low-hanging fruit to extract.

tl;dr: words and images pass your face like cocks

I made an anki deck with 8000 japanese sentences, with audio, sorted from easiest to hardest.

https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1607603368

Tell me what do you think. Do you think I should have been clearer on the description?
>>
I suck with reading passive verbs.

In this sentence is a relative passive verb clause: 旅行や仕事などで日本に来た外国人が病気になったりけがをしたりして、救急車で運ばれる人が増えています。 For 救急車で運ばれる人, is the purpose of the passive form to show that that the "transported by ambulance" is being done to that person, i.e. "person transported by ambulance" rather than "person who transported by ambulance" (meaning that person physically drove the ambulance, transporting something)?

I was looking for LNs on amazon.co.jp and noticed that it says "this title is not available in your country" on the kindle versions.
Is there a way to buy them anyway? Would be nice to avoid shipping costs and customs.
>>
>>76801685
Yeah, I meant to cite >>76801198.

By the way, although you would probably always interpret 運ぶ人 as "carrier", it's technically ambiguous without context. Look at these:

>一緒に食べるご飯は美味しい。
Meals we eat together are delicious.
>一緒に食べる人は嬉しい。
People who eat together are happy.

The reason for this is that the subject of the relative clause is omitted, and we assume it from context.

also, she's not answering what(stuff) she wanted for dinner.
she's talking about what (action) she wants from dude.

Target of the action "warmup" is obvious as fuck here.
Also, although not exclusively, 温める get associated to food most of the time.

Anyone know an easy way to change the font of cards in the Core anki deck? I want to change it to the textbook style font but all I can see on google is changing it for each individual card.

Also want to be able to hide the English translation of the sample sentence until I hover over it but that's less important.

You're probably misunderstanding. The card template affects all cards.

Card template: <div class="hint">{{Sentence-English}}</div>
Styling: .hint { background-color: black; color: black } .hint:hover { color: white }

Has anyone else started learning Japanese so they don't have to be an EOP with VNs? How long do you think it typically takes before you're able to read a moege? About a year or two of study? I've been doing anki at 30 words per day and having a blast so far, I'm curious to when I can move onto reading though
>>
>>76826353
Look at the "Images" section of the CoR, there are charts with easy to hard VNs there
>>
>>76826385
well i'm mostly just looking on a timeframe of when I can start at a decent level, not looking for VN's
so like I said, ~1 year at 30 new cards per day seem good?
>>
>>76826353
You can start reading whenever you want to start reading. It will be slow going at first, so if even a manga with a high image to dialogue ratio is too slow, keep doing Anki for awhile. You can also keep doing Anki after you start reading of course. If you're dedicated enough to do 30 words everyday you could be enjoyably reading moege in a year.

By the way all those reviews you're doing in Anki are not strictly necessary. Your ability to passively recognize words in context is higher than you think when you're just exposed naturally a couple times in the context of reading.

this makes me really happy to hear
>By the way all those reviews you're doing in Anki are not strictly necessary. Your ability to passively recognize words in context is higher than you think when you're just exposed naturally a couple times in the context of reading.
that does seem true, but I only started about a week ago, I think it might do me well to go maybe a month or two before I jump into reading, even things like Yotsuba
I'm extremely happy that the Core 2k deck is teaching kanji though, I was worried it would simplify everything into kana that would never be used for certain words
>>
>>76826950
To be clear 30 words a day, everyday, for one year gets you to 10k words. That's way overkill (although you'll need a vocabulary of that size eventually) and there's no way you'll keep it up. And you shouldn't keep it up before focusing on other things.

What I meant was if you can keep anywhere near that level of motivation up you'll be at a very good level in a year. For reference I started reading Yotsubato a couple months after I first started Japanese (5 or 6 years ago).
>>

>>76827031
so you think eventually i'll have to set it back to like 20 words, and then 10, etc etc? Do you think i should maybe wait until I finish 2k to start reading, and cut down on the 30 cards when I finish 6k?
>>
>>76827098
>Do you think i should maybe wait until I finish 2k to start reading,
No, start reading right away.
>>
>>76827115
so I should make a separate deck for mining, and do that every day, but with way less than 30 cards per day? I feel like if I start reading now, at my level, i'd be putting in literally every single word I find, i'm not very far into learning vocab as I stated before
>>
>>76827098
>>76827146

Waiting for the 2k wouldn't be a bad idea. But the thing is when you actually start reading you'll run into a lot of new words. Probably more than 30 each chapter. So it might be more efficient (for awhile at least) to start reading rather than go on to the 6k. Once you aren't running into new words as much you can always go back to the 6k to efficiently pick up what you missed.

I strongly strongly disagree with "mining." It will kill your enthusiasm. Just look up the words when you see them and you'll be surprised how often you already know what it means next time you see it.
>>
>>76827195
>>76827115
I feel like with the amount of new words i'd be exposed to, I would probably end up forgetting the ones I find in context by the time I see them again
>>
>>76827286
You'll end up looking up the same word more than once, definitely. But think of those as your reviews. The whole idea with Anki is you are getting spaced repetition with your reviews, but you are already getting that repetition of the same words through reading.
>>
>>76827340
oh, I suppose
what would you recommend reading, Yotsuba or a VN that I can easily parse?
>>
>>76827366
I'd recommend Yotsuba. It was recommended to me 5 years ago, and it's for a good reason. Even though it's an enjoyable story, a larger portion of it is told through images than most other things.

Even "dumb" VN that use a lot of cliches will be much harder since nearly everything is told through text.

I read a manga recently that reminded me of Yotsubato in some ways, Fujiyama-san wa Shishunki, I'm not sure how hard it will be though.

alright, i'll probably attempt Yotsuba tomorrow
so basically, in your opinion, don't mine, just act as though looking up the word every time is your review, and don't feel discouraged as I will be looking up a ton of words?
>>
>>76827437
Yes. I don't think Core is a bad thing, because someone already went through the trouble of putting together. And if readings too tough now I don't think it's a bad idea to keep doing Core.

But when you read yes my opinion is you should not bother saving the new words you look up.

Good luck man, keep up the enthusiasm!

500 reviews everyday and setting the minimum interval to 3-4 days instead of 1 which essentially split the amount of reviews every day for the cards I forgot.

好奇心だけだけど
Noticed this sort of thing posted a little while back and assumed it was the same anon.

>but I try...
Translation is something I try to avoid so you're trying harder than I do, at least. Do you add any words of personal interest to Anki, or anything like that?
>>
>>76834483
Haha I'm probably that anon then. Why do you try to avoid it? Is it similar to what >>76834371 said? I only did it after I finished both genki and don't know where to go from there. I tried Tobira but the articles weren't that interesting idk...
>>
>>76835325
>Why do you try to avoid it?
It's really hard for me to produce an English translation that doesn't feel like it is missing vital nuances, as well as it is a lot less taxing to understand Japanese in Japanese instead of trying to break it into English.
For myself it basically boils down to translation not personally interesting me, which may be due in part to the effort involved.

i do feel rather awkward at times, trying to get all the 'nuances' right but my desire for improvement overpowers the need for perfectionism. maybe my translations are riddled with mistakes but so be it if it means i'm pushing myself and exposing myself to japanese media on a daily basis. do you have recommendations for what i could be using at my level?
>>
>>76836232
You're one silly cunt in dire need of a being taken out to the back paddock.
>>
>>76835746
>>76836326

to follow on from what i said before, my daily routine currently consists of (at least, i try):

10 new vocab -- i physically make the cards myself so i can review them whenever i have time i.e. on the bus, when i'm waiting at the doctors etc.
i write these out a few times before letting them accumulate onto my daily deck
2 NHK articles (mainly for the reading aspect)
45 mins of japanese drama/anime

i got up to around N4 grammar and want to solidify everything, while also bringing my vocab up to par (somewhat mid N4 level) before progressing. i might go back to genki and tae kim grammar just to reinforce it. because of all the private study my speaking is atrocious :x
>>
>>76832448
Well, good for you then. If you can keep it up for a year or two, and still actually recognize those words outside of anki, you'll build your vocabulary faster than I did.

Do you know how much a full language course would cost you?
Do you know how much your Applecrap costed you (or your father)?
Do you know how much you're saving by pirating pretty much everything else with the CoR?
Do you know how better it is to study at your computer, and how phones shouldn't be your main tool?
Get a gripa yerseif, laddie.

The ultimate combination is computer + (fude)pen and paper. Phones are only practical to do flashcards or listen to stuff while you're busy in real life and can't reach a PC.

Even then, doing them on the PC is superior because it's easier to check stuff on dictionaries and do additional research right away, and when playing stuff it's easier to go back, or simultaneously read an accompanying transcription, etc. Phones are how you edge-in some study time when you are not under favorable circumstances of free time.

A simple yes or no would've been enough I'm just more comfortable with an iPad than any other if there isn't any alternatives I'll just use the PC

Anki.

I think that's subjective. I use RDP to use anki with my custom scheduling on my tablet and I prefer it to the computer.

even though I'm currently creating a anki deck from my handwritten vocab books I still think it's important that I keep writing shit down, some parts just get burnt into your brain in a way that anki won't match (it has its own advantages of course)
I'm not sure how many kanji I could write from memory alone, but I'd say it's at least a few hundred

Received an email prompt that きんいろモザイク volume 8 is due to be published tomorrow. If a digital version is up, I'll grab it and post the volume 1~8 mega link in the thread.

These automated alerts are sent via a site called Alert Shop Bell

If you're the sort of anon who has a sizable list of series you're keeping an eye on, I definitely recommend using this site. For the handful of alerts they've sent me, all of them have been spot on with the assumed release dates.
