I'm not trying to mean or anything here, but what did you plan on doing with that?

That's one of those fields where you could only get a career in academia or writing. I sincerely hope you have at least a PhD; it's the only hope you have of getting anywhere.

t. English and History major

I don't regret it at all. If you're going to spend that much time and effort into something, you better be sure as hell that you won't regret it later in life.

Philosophy is all about thinking, and you didn't stop to think about whether it would be a good idea to study it?
>>

not at all. I needed a degree that fullfilled the reqs for PA school so it was either that or biology and biology is a lot less useful over all. Majoring in chemistry got me a first author credit publication in a tier 2 journal and taught me how to use several industry standard analytical instruments so if PA doesnt work out for me I always have a fallback.

You must be born in a poor family, they are usually obsessed with money.
Doing something you like is as much important as being well paid, I'd say you need a good balance between the two.

It's similar all over the World. IT security is becoming big. Here it's for compliance reasons: public institutions working with sensible data in Germany have to guarantee some level of IT security.

They didn't care that my subject is Computational Linguistics. The question was: can you program? Are you passionate and willing to learn? I was. CL jobs are indeed scarce, it's a limited field.

That's the same everywhere mate. You have to spend a lot of time studying to be a respectable doctor. Do you think it wouldn't be something serious? You'd be in charge of human lives.
Also, attending "dumb and poor" people is necessary to your education. Not only are you doing a service to your folk, but you are also learning to treat all sorts of people. That's what it's all about, people.
>>
>>76661550
Yeah, but if you we're to study Computational Linguistics expecting lots of linguistics, you'd be disappointed. It's 40% programming, 5% statistics/probability theory, 35% general computer science and, at best, 20% pure linguistics

I'm studying medicine. I chose it because it seemed like a safe bet. If I could go back in time and chose differently, I absolutely would.
I would have gone to trade school and taken an apprenticeship to become a welder or a mechanic, then I would have taken an additional year of high school to get "general study competence", then I would have gone to Germany or Sweden to study automotive engineering.

I have basically no work experience, so dropping out now and starting to study engineering would be stupid. I'll just become a doctor and use the part of my measly pay check that doesn't go towards food and lodning to pursue my automotive interests.

>what did you study
I did Electrical Engineering(I wanted to do something with robots and shit) first at some far away city, switched to due to mental and general health problems to Chemistry(my best subject at school) and now I'm on the verge of dropping out.

I should've applied to a competitive International Relations program at a good German university or some school abroad after doing some volunteering in a foreign country or something while I was still young enough and still had my government grant. This is the area people considered me to be gifted in apparently but this seemed like a degree only suitable for kids that already got the parents with connections.

My parents don't have university degrees so I didn't really know about all this extra qualifications bullshit and university stuff. I also was too lazy/too stupid/too anxious to inform myself.

A STEM degree really seemed like the way to go to climb up the social ladder.

At least I'm not really indebted and still in my mid-twenties and I still have the ability to take a student loan(so one other shot) maybe I should've powered through the other degrees using them to land a job in another area or something. Or is this the sunken cost fallacy speaking?

I actually have no fucking idea what to do in my life at the moment. I'm doing some tedious wagecuck job right now. I'm actually thinking about going back to the start and do Computer/Communications/Electrical Engineering crossover at my current school...

In a real computer science from a university course it seems to be a lot of theory and projects, learning algorithms and shit.

I went to a Instiute of technology, my degree is a bachelor of science in computing and information technolgy.
We covered lots of various subjects the main ones were Programming, web design, networking with some minor stuff sprinkled here and there like databases, game design etc.

It was a real jack of all trades degree but I seem better off than my uni friends.
I can program in Java and C, I can make a good website in various different languages and I have a few android apps under my belt which was self taught.

One of my friends went to a big uni and did computer science. He can't program.

I have not started looking but I am not aiming high really, I would love to do something support side or something like a data center technician but Ill probably end up as a code monkey if I am lucky.

This is a CHAD degree if there was any. All the guys and girls here come from financially well families, have lots of connections, and some of their family members own businesses that might hire them.

Business is about taking the lead, and making connections.

Econ and Mathematics at McGill, whose reputation is supposed to help me get a job but Im still unemployed even though I graduated in April. Just fucking kill me. I should have studied Comp Sci, they're getting all the jobs and im good enough at math to do it.

US

Double majored, jazz studies and linguistics (odd mix I know, but the scholarships were good enough that I could study my hobby and also my job maker)

Not regretting it so far, I love my linguistics courses. Want to go to grad school for it and specialize in translation

>I should have studied Comp Sci, they're getting all the jobs and im good enough at math to do it.
it's not too late

t. did biochem and am now almost done comp sci, already have 2 jobs lined up, both paying rather well (more than I would get even with a phd in biochem)

I've already graduated though. Plus my GPA is extremely mediocre so i'm not going to get into any great programs.
>>
>>76682639
The only 'great' program is at waterloo basically and the only thing great about them is their coop basically. If programming interests you, it's never too late to do comp sci or software engineering at any university basically (aside from shitty ones like york, lakehead etc.)

After my degree I really didn't want to do a masters, said fuck it and did an extra year of comp sci, genuinely liked it and programming, now I'm about to finish and I've got some great gigs lined up, its lit.
>>
>>76682670
Where did you do your program? Was it like a continuing studies thing?
>>
>>76682691
Carleton, did my first degree at UofT. No it was a new degree, took me about 3 years to complete (took 2 summers during those 3 years). I wanted to do software engineering with coop but that would have taken about 5 years which honestly felt like too long at the time but at the end of the day, I have the same position as many people who graduated from software eng positions. I don't write off the newer degree as a waste of time because 1. it's made me very employable in an area I'm interested in and 2. a masters in science would have taken 2-3 years anyhow.

See if you can get a bunch of credits accreditted so you don't have to take anything other than the core courses btw if you do choose to do comp sci.

interesting. Im definitely going to consider it down the road. Broke now though from my first degree (paid international fees). I might feel a bit weird being in undergrad again when I'm like 25/26 though.
>>
>>76682808
>from my first degree (paid international fees)
wtf
nothing to feel bad about btw, assume you retire at 65, you finish at 26, that's 39 years of work compared to 43 years of work, not too different
>>
>>76682853
? im a burger. My undergrad at McGill cost me a pretty penny.
>>
>>76682891
huh
why would you come to mcgill? I'd assume it'd be cheaper to go to an instate school in the US

have you also considered stuff like law school?
>>
Did a bachelor in administrative law. Loved it.
Then did a master in tax law. I oh so regret it. I started to hate it.

I kind of wish i studied IT because i code as a hobby.
>>
>>76682911
With the exchange rate it was about the same price as my instate (University of Rhode Island) but still was about 17k/year plus living expenses. I just figured at the same price as my instate McGill is much better.

And because I have shitty mental health my cgpa at mcgill is 2.77 (fucking kill me). No way I can get into a law program. Just wish I did comp sci from the start desu. I also have Irish citizenship though, might study comp sci cheaply at some Irish Uni.

>>76682957
huh, well good luck my dude, try to self learn as well so you can get an idea of what you're getting into
>>
>>76682982
thanks a lot bud. Hope you're doing well and good luck on the upcoming gigs.
>>
>>76660935
this. I feel your pain froggo. I hate studying that's why my performance is absolute trash.
I wish I could just end it, but everything else you can study are either business related and I don't care about that stuff at all, or meme subjects like arts, genderstudies etc.
I guess I will just end up being 30 without anything, and probably neck myself at that point.
>>
>>76674483
damn dude thats harsh, but you know most civil engineers dont spend much time on site (depends on your role though)
>>
Going to school and gonna get an IT internship. Feels good man.
>>
Accounting, currently writing my master's thesis

shit sucks and I know nothing
>>
>>76660208
yuh
>>
Gonna start Linguistics in three months once I leave the army.

Not gonna regret it cause I'm planning on killing myself in my thirties anyways, so I might as well learn something I find interesting.
>>
I am currently studying paramedicine, so I have another year and half until i regret it or not
