In both of these sentences I don't really get the meaning of てしまう. The second sentence especially throws me off because she's doing something so normal by handing her change.

The definitions I can find are: do something completely, do something impulsively, imply regret/undesirability, express surprise. None really match what she's saying here, especially for the second sentence. On google some guy said it could express "carefreeness," which would make sense for sentence 1, but in sentence 2 she's just handing her change.

What's the meaning/nuance of しまう in both of these sentences?

Giving something for free means loss for sellers, so 〜もつけちゃう is often used as a slogan. The second sentence is a joke.

How bad is informal writing in Japanese? (2ch, Twitter, YouTube comments, pixiv...)

Would it be like 4chan, where you can spot people writing decently from retards who can't even into Caps Lock?
How does one tell? Is punctuation a mystery to natives? Because guides in general are very loose in this area.

Is my first mining deck supposed to be every single word and kanji at the beginning of the manga I'm reading?

My advice is to mine only the amount of words you will be able to review on that very day, else it will get backlogged and lose the appeal of mining decks: being in context.
So if you want to keep it meaningful, choose what you're mining wisely.

I am about to give up learning Japanese.
I am in second semester in university, and now it gets too much.
I chose it because I wanted to go to university and this was the most interesting class for me.
Now I achieved some N5 or N4 even in Japanese, in the beginning it was very interesting and fun, but honestly, now it is just tons of exceptions, fucked up kanji which I have to memorize 50 a week, and complicated forms and always different pronunciations (fuck I still struggle to count things or days of the month). Besides, I dont really ever use Japanese except in class. Still I think this is the most interesting subject of all subjects in university, but now it feels like meh, why torture myself with all those te, ta, tari-forms and so on.
It is like astrophysics - I am interested in how galaxy works in simple terms, but when it comes to math, I dont really give a fuck.
Why continue?

That's not necessary, and probably a bad idea. When you set anki to show new cards in a random order it actually prioritises more recently added cards, so you can have all the benefits of fresh context and the convenience is a backlog at the same time. On the other hand if you don't start building a backlog early on, you'll find it difficult to mine enough words every day to meet your quota in the future.

People with high correct % in anki for vocab: How do you do it? Did you do RTK/etc to make it easier to recognise words? Do you write out each new word, make sentences with it, etc? Or is your memory just good enough that you see it for the first time in anki and you can recall it the next time it shows?

I started doing isolated kanji study in hopes to improve my recognition and there was a word that came up in anki that I had forgotten. I remembered the meaning of the two kanji it used which helped me remember the word itself (予定 = in advance/fix = schedule/plan) so that was neat. But my retention is still pretty bad.

What would you consider high retention? Try making a custom study of forgotten cards of that day. Do it as far as possible from actual reviews. For instance, if you do reviews when you wake up, do custom study before going to bed, or vice-versa.
I did this when my retention started to drop due massive new kanji input by Core (around 700 cards for 350 kanji). It helped with damage control, although if you're doing individual kanji study, you already seem way more prepared to it.
Always remember to look to the amount of stuff you're learning, not the amount you're forgetting.

A vocabulary of 1000 is very beneficial before you start reading, but if you finish tae kim you're totally free to try reading with what vocabulary you have up to that point.

Ah, I see. Well, generally I recommend finishing Core 2k before reading, since it'll give you a foundation to avoid this constant looking up every single word, but if you don't feel demotivated by it, keep reading.

I agree with you, but context seems like the strongest plus in mining to me, measuring a word's usefulness as a beginner is a really shaky science. Think of Yotsubato teaching you pic related in first or second volume, or all the cult references that have no real life application. It's as "bad" as learning political lingo via Core.

Once you've got say, 1000 or 1500 cards mature in Core 2K/6K, you need to be spending at least 1/2-to-3/4 as much time reading as you do on Anki. This is the only way to begin maturing your grammar abilities at an early stage.

Why are you doing 700 cards a day? Lower your new cards. Anki is based on spaced repetition, not seeing cards every day. You need to use "Again" accurately for that to work. You push again when you got the card wrong.

You set the standard yourself. The exact answer is obviously ideal, but if you're OK with making the same mistake outside Anki (until it gets corrected through exposure), a minor error might be passable.

The deck recommended in the guide never changed. There are older versions of Core 2K/6K in places like AnkiWeb that you might have downloaded.

It's not like you wasted your time, but the format of your cards is very much not optimal. The clue should be the same as what you would see when reading (the kanji), not an arbitrary sentence and English definition. Anyway, you should be able to easily reformat the cards to look like >>76638804.

I only ask because I was reading Zizek and that guy speaks like 8 languages and his English is flawless. He manages to write incredibly dense and detailed philosophy in what his probably his 5th language. He has a relative advantage though in that Slovenian is Indo-European.

I couldn't think of any IE native speakers who managed a comparable level of fluency in a more alien language like Japanese.

Yeah I love that youtube channel. That video was part of the N1 grammar series but they have series for all the steps of JLPT and in the lower level ones they talk a bit clearer and slower obviously. I think for N5 they even do it in english. So there's a very nice skill progression all the way, you get appropriate listening practice at the same time as the grammar study

Is 関西弁 seen as uncouth or backwards?

Perhaps it comes from learning the language and being corrected to use 東京弁, but I get the impression that those from the 東京 region might look down on 関西弁.

I was told to make sure to pronounce the に in 何で (for describing 'by what means' as opposed to 'why') since it can sound 関西弁.

Is it to do with the fact that many comedians come from the region? Is it that 関西 is historically backwards? Is it historical because of 豊臣秀吉 and the weakening of his power after his death? Or is it much more general? I would think being near to 京都, it would have more historical precedence than 東京.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Yeah it's hardest at first. Do like 10 words a day instead of 20, and do some individual kanji study for a bit along side it. Either do a radical deck or just go through the first few hundred of RTK. Therein implies an "alternative" 方, in which there is no people (instead of 一人). When you clean it up and make it sound nicer in English, and in right context, adverbial phrases like ".. at best" ".. on a good day" "if you're lucky.." could also be used. However, if there is an ironical aspect to it, it would certainly go over my head.

I'd guess it's no different from people using を with the -たい form of verbs. From an artificial prescriptive grammar point of view maybe it doesn't make sense, but that is how people use the language.

I'm reading some text that cannot be selected, there're many chars I don't know so it's complicated, in a situation like this I usually go through charmap till I find the character and then copy-paste in wikitionary or google translate to find the meaning or the pronunciation, but charmap isn't a very orderly thing, on the other hand this kanji map is very neatly ordered and it's selectable, it took me 30 seconds to find a character that would take 5 minutes to find in charmap otherwise.

get kanjitomo, you put your cursor over the kanji/words and it shows you the tranlation, reading etc.
it depends a bit on the size/quality/background, but works most of the time

at least for me it chrashes now and then, but that's an actual life saver

I'd say like:

At N3, you can have conversations with a tutor or teacher, someone who is specifically practiced in talking to gaijin

At N2 you can have conversations with a patient native speaker

At N1 you can have 1 on 1 conversations with most people, but still will likely have trouble following multiple natives talking among themselves.
