The thing is that, since protectionism and government tinkering with the economy has existed for something like 80 years, it's hard to revert it.
We had a period in the 90s, the government essentially passed a law that tied it's own hands on devaluation and monetary emission, arguably the biggest economic tools the government has. At the same time they liberalized the economy.
Our GDP grew at retarded rates, revenue jumped up, consumption multiplied, deficit disappeared, and foreign investors were suddenly pouring millions in.
But something like 20% of the population was in one way or another occupying a job that was created by good old protectionism. And since the change was so brutal and shocking, unemployment rates fired up. Sadly, that's what the common man remembers the most. Leftist parties like to fear monger saying that voting for the right is "goin' back to the 90s".
Wish the government had gone with a more gradual change. Instead of firing every non essential employee, stop hiring new people and cut down on the ones you have over a period of 10 years or something.
