I like Singapore.

I lived there for about 9 months, very enjoyable experience. Lots of very nice people, good public transportation (if a bit crowded at times), great food, and ordnung. The cost of living was pretty high (had to pay $800 USD/month to rent a single room in a HDB flat), but the location was phenomenal. I'd still like to go back one day.

Singaporean students get heavy subsidises, they only pay maybe at most 20,000 USD for a four year course. Without subsidies, you would need to pay around 50,000 USD before even considering accommodation and food, which is expensive. I think foreign students are eligible for the subsidies if you agree to work for the government (as a doctor or such) for several years after graduating, at lower than market rate of course.

Well, the LLB programme is actually a 4 year programme in the UK if you want to practice law there, as you need to take the LPC or Barrister course (forget what it's called) the year after you graduate to become a solicitor or a barrister and afterwards you need to spend two years on a training contract to actually be a full-fledged lawyer. Americans conversely study an undergrad degree (usually four years) + another 3 years of law school and they can practice law right away after being admitted to the bar, so it's really only one year's difference. Law school in the US is also a bit different, it's more vocationally-oriented than academic.

Its a trick. Because so much labour is imported, if a sector is performing poorly, they simply lay off the foreign workers, effectively booting them out of the country since it is too expensive to live here while unemployed. Lower skilled labourers in construction get their Employment Passes (their right to stay in Singapore) revoked and have to leave the country.

This is why Singapore appears to be at full employment all the time. If you consider the local workforce unemployment rates are around 2-3%.

nah, I got my degree from the UK, recently graduated my LPC but I am currently working in a patent attorney firm in Shanghai while also trying to get a practicing license there. As I didn't get my qualifications in HK it's very tough for me trying to get into HK's practicing course.

IMO I think the merging of the 2 legal jurisdiction is unlikely to happen due to our position as the only city in China where financial freedom exists on par with most other international cities in the world.

Hong Kong's legal industry is in danger of being replaced not because of the jurisdiction issue but more about the fact that more and more chinese lawyers are taking advantage of HK's financial position and is starting to take up practice in HK as well as China/UK/US, in 10 something years fresh legal professionals entering the industry will be unable to compete with the chinese lawyers.
