>President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday he saw no legitimate successor to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and France no longer considered his departure a pre-condition to resolving the six-year-old conflict.
Can someone tell me what exactly he meant by this specific thing?

even though assad is an ass to his population, he's pretty much the best option
trying to give the middle east democracy after such a long time of living relatively comfortably under a dictatorship doesn't work, look at pretty much any nation that had democracy forced on them in the ME in the past 20 years
the people just get told by their regional leaders for who to vote for, and the regional leaders just get told by whichever candidate holds actual power over the region, and all the elections get absolutely retardedly obvious corruption in vote counts because the people don't give a shit about democracy and open corruption isn't seen as terrible by them
even though giving an ethnic minority government absolute power doesn't turn out great, it's better than syria turning into iraq
