Why does Italy always get shit on for it's performance in

We didn't lose in Afghanistan, our military train was basically destroyed by the winter returning home after we'd conquered Kabul and kicked their pretender king out. We came back twenty years later and finished the job much like the Italians anyway.

After the first war most of the gains were reversed after the Khan returned to power, but in peace he was amenable to us and actually formed an alliance to help take Herat from Persia. By 1878 the Khan agreed to become a British protectorate and conceded parts of Peshawar and Balochistan and the Khyber Pass to British India.
I would say Afghanistan under British rule was far more independent than a princely state in terms of responsibilities, but less independent in that foreign policy was under our control.
