how long did it take you to become fluent in a second or third language regardless of what language you learnt as a foreign language?

depends on how different are your native language and foreign language you learnt.

English (second language) maybe a year? We had classes from 2nd to 3rd grade.
Norwegian 6 weeks (easy as fuck when you speak Swedish)
Danish 12 months of living in Denmark.

I have pretty much spoken english before it was even taught in school (3rd grade). Though speaking wise maybe in middle school was when I became proficient and high school when I became fluent. Cute gif btw.

Years. I am no natural talent, so I had to practice English language by reading a lot, repeating words and syllables I heard from TV, radio and music. Later on I submitted myself in learning with actual native English speakers to bench test my skills.
Obviously our level of education paved a lot of way towards easier learning, however I must highlight that the actual motivation came from my own will to learn. I can nowadays call myself as fluent in English, however I still can't really think in English. I have to "translate" my thoughts.
I also speak reasonably good Swedish and survive in German and in French.
