I live there, always did.
It's a better city to live in than to visit frankly. Not many museums and you can tour the historical centers and different sights of the city in a day if you're motivated, so plan to visit the country side (Medoc, St Emilion, Arcachon...).
There are quite a lot of events and the nightlife is pretty good. You can find beautiful restaurants quite easily as well.
