What is it like to live in Europe and not be able to go 100kms in any one direction without having to learn a completely new language? Is it as terrible as it sounds?

In Europe everything is super expensive, especially hotels, and you can't afford to go anywhere anyway.
Also you can just speak English or buy a language guidebook.

So is English just unofficially the lingua franca of Europe? Can you really just get around with just that?

More like 1,000kms
I'm at 700kms from Spain and probably about 400kms from England by plane.

You also have a frontier with Switzerland, another one with Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and a tini tiny one with Italy.

Oh wait you don't have a frontier with the netherlands, and the one with Italy wasn't as small.

There's no need for a frontier between the French and the Dutch.
You can't even tell when you've crossed it.

lo que quiere decir es que vive en un paĆs con mismo idioma a lo largo de mil km, estilo Rusia, pero le interesa ver como es entre las culturas europeas, tan cercanas y tan distintas
