I grew up watching Avatar: The Last Airbender back when I was a kid, and even I wouldn't claim that ATLA has proper character development or visual direction. It's just Star Wars, set in a fantasy counterpart to East Asia, featuring lots of references to Cowboy Bebop and DBZ.

ATLA borrows a lot of common story beats but it doesnt really match up with Star Wars specifically past the generic Heroes Journey trope and rebelling against evil empire

In terms of character developments, each character is fundamentally different at the end of the show from where they started, but at no point did there changes feel unrealistic or rushed (well, maybe with the exception of the quick flip in personality for the prince guy). This is a mark of good character development to me, and its something I rarely see in any TV show. There is a reason that this show won so many awards and kicked off the restart american TV animation as a serious medium

the visuals might not be to your taste, but honestly it has some of the most stunning scenes i've ever witnessed in animation, especially at the end of seasons fights and anything spiritually related

i fully admit it has a shit ton of anime influence, but thats to its benefit

you should consider rewatching it, especially past the relatively childish first season, theres a reason it still has a massive fan base

few things are, but as far as action/shounen goes its easily one of the best in characters, visual direction, and storytelling (although its relatively simplistic), and I've seen far more shows in these genres than i care to admit
